THE OPOTIKI SUICIDE. By Telegraph—Press Association Opotiki, June 10. An inquest regarding the death of John Clark, jeweller, was held last evening. The police evidence was to the effect that Clark was under surveillance in connection with a firo at Opotiki on June 3. The Coroner's verdict was that deceased enmo to his end by Wowing his head off with some high explosive, possibly a detonator, while in a 6tato of mental depression.
RETURNED SOLDIER DROWNED. Br Telecrapu—Press Association. Auckland, Juno 10. A drowning accident occurred at Karotahi Gap, on the West Coast, four miles from Waiuku, this morning. Two men, A. Sojnerville and G. Tivenon, were fishing from tho rocks at tho gap when a hugo wave came suddenly in from seaward and washed' over the rocks on which they were standing. Sonierville managed to cling to the rocks until the waters receded, but Tivenon was nnablo to retain his hold, and was washed out lo sea and dro\yned, his companion being unnblo to rescuu him. Tivenon was a returned soldier and was about thirty years of age.
M. Clemcnceau said to a deputation of schoolgirls who presented him with a, gold pen: "I have children and grandchildren; it is a grandfather who is speaking to you, and ho is very touched by your thought. Yes, I will sign the Peace-Treaty-with your pen, and I will do overything in order that this Treaty may be just and lasting.".
