HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
• MONTHLY MEETING. The Hutt County Council met yester. day, those present being Councillors F. G. Cooper (chairman), W. Galloway,' W. J. Howell, M. W. ..Welch, J. Whiteman, and P. Cavanagh. Tho County Inspector reported that a number of tiic ratepayers at 'Plimmerton Extension were drawing water for house, hold purposes from the pipe laid .between the small reservoir in the rcservo ana the concrete tank erected by the council. 'As the supply is very limited ho recommended that the practice should be stopped until greater storage accommodation is provided. The inspector alsoj reported that 42iu. concrete pipes had been laid'on the Horokiwi Valley Bead and the small bridgo,removed. Similar work had.been dono in tho Mungaroa Riding to replace the Horse-shoe Bridge. In connection with tlio metalling of the southern end of the Taitu Road, the in-spector-reported that tho royalty paid for rivor shingle was excessive, viz., 10(1. per yard or load, which worked out at a total cost of Cs. per yard placed on thj> road. This excessive cost could not bis avoided, as there was no nearer supply of shingle available. Ho had inspected tho Gollans Valley Hill Road, and fowiu that a length' of aboul! 12 chains win in a dangerous condition, and he recommended that it should be-fenced. Tho road in the valley needed metalling badly, and instructions had been given for this work. 1 The report was adopted. . Mr. R. M'Villy'< on behalf of three 'other residents of Lowry Bay, attended the council for the purpose of obtaining the council's permission to plant trees on a small reserve in the bay In order to obtain a little privacy for his and other whares which stood just off the reserve. Ho stated .that at present picnic parties camped on the property and ho was deprived of all privacy. His action it approved would tend,to .improve tho locality. After some discussion it was decided to inspect the locality with a view to deciding what action should be taken. It was admitted that picnickers could not Ire stopped from visiting the place, as the reserve was public property. Councillors Galloway and Howell were appointed to represent the council at the conference which is to deal with improvements to main arterial roads in tho Wellington district. . A lottor. was received from the New Zealand Labour Party at Lower Hutt asking tho council's support in protesting agaiiist the establishment of a prison camp at Trentham or in any part of tho Hutt Valley. The letter was received without comment. The Wellington Automobile Club wrote respecting the Waikanao .Eoad and tho Akitaxawa Gorge, and asked that when the. Waikanao Eoad was opened the rounding off. of corners in tho gorge be given consideration, as the road would have to take a lot of traffic. It was decided to inform the Automobile. Club that the matter would receive attention when the road was opened. ;A resident of-Ocean Beach Eoad at Paekakariki wrote complaining of the large number of wandering stock which woro doing serious damage to gardens and hedges. Councillor Howell said that the state of affairs amounted to almost a scandal, and some action should bo taken. It was decided to instruct tho ianger'to give tho district more attention. A similar complaint was received from a resident of Wainui-o-mata, who mentioned that a black bull was causing a lot of trouble on the road., The derk reported that tho necessary steps had already been token, Councillor Welch was appointed to represent the county at the forthcoming New Zealand Counties' Association Conference. '
