FATAL FALL DOWN A LIFT WELL
By Telceranh—PrOßß Association. Auckland, .Tune 10. A carpenter named Henry Lord was killed by a fall down the well of a lift in a shop in Queen Street. Alterations in the shop were being carried out and the lift was be'-.Mg altered. Just before tho accident, a plumber passed Hie pines where Lord was working at the inn of the. lift, and he noticed that Lord'was lying down, with his hpad projecting over 'the lift well, engaged in driving a four-inch nail in the ceiling. He did not apnear In be in any danger of fulling down the lift. Immediately afterwards the nlnniber head a crash and found that Lord had fallen down to (he bottom of the lift well, from u height of about .10 feet. At an inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned, the Coroner adding a rider that statutory provisions did not call for any safeguards during the construction of euch works, but the evidenco disclosed a danger to workmen and tho necessity for soma further provision.
