NEW STATE MINE
IN WAIKATO FIELD. The Government has decided on the purchase of a State coal mino in tho North Island. The area to bo worked is in the Waikato coal Sold adjaccnt to tho Pukcrairo pit, Tho Minister of Mines (tho Hon. W. D. S. MocDonald) stated yesterday that lie was having a report made by an engineer, with' a view to commencing operations as soon as possible. Beforo coal could be mined, however, some railway would be necessary, and other preparations would have to bo made. It would not be possible to tako coal from the pit for eighteen months or two years. In any case, ho added, tho output of coal would not bp increased, but rather reduced, by tho opening of a new mine now, Mien tlioro was a scarcity of miners.
