PRESENTATION TO A SCHOOL INSPECTOR
TEACIIKRS' WORK AND SAURIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, June 9. Mr. James Gibson Gow, M.A., who has been inspector of schools in South Canterbury for thirty-three years, and who will retire shortly, on Saturday was entertained at lunoheon in the Bay Pavilion by a big gathering tf teachers, former members and chairmen of tho.late South Canterbury Education Board, and meinbors of tho Canterbury Board, whose chief inspector, Mr. Brock, was also present. Mr. Gow was presented with a gold watch, and an address from tho teachers expressive of their high personal esteem and appreciation of tho ability, conscientiousness, earnestness, mid zeal and sound learning ho had brought to bear in tho discharge of his duties. A number of old -members of tho board and head teachers spoke in eulogy of tho inspector's work, and letters were read from absent former teachors. In reply, Mr. Gow thanked the boards and twichors for tho support given him, and recalled tho hospitality of country teachers in the old days when they kid to accommodate him. IMerrin.g to present-day conditions, ho said it was a S'jandal that a teacher should liavo SO to 90 pupils in a cla.«. Such a state of things should not lie allowed to continue. Teachers were worked out bodily and mentally. The work should be reduced and the salaries raised to induco peoplo of the right stamp to enter the noblest of the professions.
