STATE STEAMERS ADVOCATED. Ey ToleEraDh—Press Association. ' Christchurch, June 9. At a meeting of tho City Council tonight, tho ferry service came up for discussion, through the receipt of a letter from tno Hon. T. M. Wilford (Minister of Marino) stating that tho inspector of soanien had special instructions and tho Marine Department was doing everything possible to set men for the stokehold of tho Maori. After discussion, during which various reasons were advanced for tho preference of firemen for tho Mararoa over tho Maori, tho following motion was carried;—" That the letter bo received, and this council- is of opinion that tho time has arrived when the Government should acquire tho necessary steamers to conduct tho ferry service."
