GRADING OF TEACHERS
STATEMENT BY THE DEPARTMENT. Tho Education Department recently issued the annual revision, of tho grading or classification of certificated teacher* in the Dominion. Under the regulations any teacher has tho right to appeal against his position on the grading list. It is interesting to note (slates the Do. partment) that the number of appeals has nover been very largo in proportion to the number of teachers graded, and that tho number of appeals has steadily decreased each year. This seems to indicate that the system is working very satisfactorily and that n close approximation has now boon reached to the correct assessment oi teachers' general qualification*. The total number of teachers graded was 3931,; and only 1-lfl of these, or 3.) per cent, of the whole, have appealed. Tho number appealing in each district, is. as follows, the number „in brackets indicating the number of teachers graded in the district; Wanganui, 2 (257); Nelson, 8 (138); Hawke's Bay, 10.(KG)? Wellington, 21 (538); Auckland. 50 (981); Southland, 1 (233); Taraiuiki, 0 (158) j Otago, IS (519);. Canterbury, 22 (7139) t Native schools, 1 (55).
