| STOCK TRANSPORT ON THE j. : : RAILWAYS- ~ ' ;.'" SERIOUS COMPLAINTS AGAINST '. | | ."'.. THE DEPARTMENT/ ■ IBy Telegraph—Special Correspondent.' | . s ' Palmerston North, June 7.li. .The matter of tho carriage of stock for [ the freezing works was brought up at tho i /monthly, meetiug. of the Palmeraton ; branch of tho Earhiers' Union to-day by i Mr. Pearce, who said that he had per-; j sonally investigated the Wthod employed ! toy the Railway Department, and found : 'that a scandalous stut'e .of affairs existed. ' The trouble was caused 'through shunting j' at wayside stations where bumping caused : i the cattle to turn round and so lose their. ' footing. They had only spaco enough for j cna hoof, and if a beast once got down ['~ only a horse could pull it up. Again, i recently, four trucks of stock, sent by j: the speaker, from .had del predated from £3 to £i per animal by | .the time they had reached tho works. In [l one' truck one beast was dead-and five others. were down, while-the rest were j inqthing .but'congealed jelly, and. blood, : , and practically useless for freezing. pur- ] Eposes. On one shipment tho speaker had I lost- over JKOO, yet, on the • other hand, | some trucks sent from Fcatherstonjind ■ _ arrived at the works in perfect condition, ; 'which showed that tbo fault lay with I 'the Railway Department.. Other members t endorsed tho remarks of .Mr. Pearce. I Mr. Buchanan said that the same thing j ,'had often occurred with ' his pedigree | ' stock, and he had been compelled to'have i 1 it placed nextto a passengeY ear toiivoid ,' I having it shunted. Tt was a-senudaloiis j ■' state of affairs, and something showl'd .he I done. They should have special stock j trains, and tho owners of stock should be i advised of their miming. After further discussion, the following ';/ motion was- carried unanimously :—"That : the Railway Department .ho. asked to !■ remedy at once tho present .scandalous '" method''of carrying stock owiner'to .the. :■ rerious .Josses suffered in transit." It was ! decided to'send the resolution as a remit > to the sub-principal executive; and to ask' ; other'unions'to cooperate, in Hie matter."
