The Hon. D. H. Guthrie returned on' Saturday from Pahiatua. The Hon. W. H. Hemes has returned from Auckland. • Gunner P.D. Daniell, N.Z.F.A. of Foxton, who is returning to New Zealand on June 20, has been on active service for the past two and a half years in France and Belgium, and until rccentlyly was with th« Army of Occupation, in Uerniany. Mr. Albert Goldie, who has arrived in New Zealand for the purpose of fostering direct trade and communication with Los Angeles (California), was formerly an Australian pressman. His wife is a daughter (Dulcie) of Dr. Deamer, formerly of ■ Featkerston and Island Bay (Wellington), and a lady of natural literary ability. When but seventeen years of' ago Mrs. Goldie wroto a series of "Cave-Man" sketches, for the Sydney "Bulletin" that were startling in their strength and originality.
Captain F. 0. Seaborne, in command of the City of Dunkirk, now at Auckland, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for sinking an enemy submarine after a duel lasting an hour and twenty minutes while he was in coni,mand of tho Nowby Hall. The- vessel was on route from Barry to New York, and when some, 800 miles from tho lat-. ter port was just missed by a torpedo. The captain manoeuvred his ship and brought the submarine astern. At about 3000, yards' range the U-boat opened fire, which was replied to by tho Ncwby Hall's din. gun. The fiftieth shot struck the submarine's largest gun, and after being hit once or twice again the enemy suddenly disappeared.
Numerous transfers are to be effected in the Otngo and Southland postal services in the near future. Mr. F. S. Morton, chief clerk, Invercargill, goes to Dunedin as chief clerk; Mr. C. W. Matheson, parcels clerk, Invercargill,' to chief of the mail-room, Dunedin; Mr. B. C. Brodio, second money-office clerk at Invercargill, to supervisor of M.0.5.8., Dunedin; Mr. W. M. Caven, district accountant, to chief clerk, Oaniaru; Mr. Tiegoiming, postmaster, Bluff, to postmaster, Wellington South, is succeeded by Mr. A. E. Fordkam as postmaster at BUiff; Mr. E. • Peebles, postmaster at Wyndham, to postmaster, Fairlie; Mr. V. V. Hodge, from Otautau, succeeds Mr. Peebles at Wyndham, while Mr. C. (.). lloss goes to Otautau as postmaster. Miss E. H. Nicholls, supervisor of the Invercargill telephone exchange, goes to Eastings as supervisor there, and Miss E. T. O'Uomiell, assistant-supervisor, goes to Tim'aru exchange as supervisor.
Mr. Scott Colville, who is at present in Wellington . making preliminary arrangements for various theatrical and concert attractions, is leaviDjj for Christchurch on Wednesday.
Mr. Douglas Hodgson, whoso accidental death in England was ohronicled recently, was manager of the Tiinaru branch of tho business of Messrs. A. and T. Burt (Ltd.). Ho left New Zealand in 1916 with the Expeditionary Forces, attached to tho Medical Corps. He served in Franco up' to the signing of tho armistice, when he entered temporarily into tho servicesi of tho firm's London house, preparatory to again taking up his duties in' New Zealand. Entering Ike employ of the company in 1902, Mr. Hodgson had been in the firm's service sinoo leaving school. For a period of 6even years ho wns encaged in the Dunedin warehouse prior to his transference to the management of tho Timaru branch. He wns a bright and energetic young man,, with the promise of a successful future, and was very popular with all whom ho oame in contact.
