HIDES AND TALLOW SALES

The fortnightly sales of hides and tallow! wero held yesterday by the various brokers.

• Messrs. Dalgety and Co, catalogued a .larsie /and representative assortment of hides and calfskins. Those lines which were , not solected at schedule rates by the; tanners' representatives were submitted' toauction, and very keenly ' com--peted-for.-by-the exporters present. Good sound ,os hides ana medium and lightweight, cow hides 1 advanced up to Id. pec lb.; on last sale rates. ' Other lines .were -Arm at late rates, and tallow showed a further advance of from 6s. to 9s: per "cwt.' r . •

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company; Ltd., Tcport that the bulk of'the .catalogue comprising sound ,hides ; and-calfskins was taken by,, tan-, ners at Government schedule prices; prior to.,the ,sale. The balance was eagerly competed "for under the hammer- at. values.in. some instances, exceeding. Government schedule - prices, especially-, for sound: ox and cow hides. Very little tullow was offered, and prices obtained, were on a level with laßt sale's rateß.

Messrs. Levin and Company, Limited, submitted a fair selection of hides to a good attendance of tanners The bulk of the best ox hides and calfskins were allocated to tanners at,. Government sohcdule prices. All lots not selected by tanners w?re submitted to auction. Biddings wero animated, and, in' conseauenco, cow's of light and medium weights changed hands at from id. to l}d. ; per lb. above the Government maxiinmnprices, whilst kips.and inferior sortß sold readily at- an advance , of id. to 3d. upon last Bale's rates. Manufacturers and shippers operated freely for tallow, and whilst all lots realised last sale's rulings, best lines advanced 9s. per owt.i for casks, and On. for tins, upon prices ruling at the sale held a fortnight ago. Messrs. Murray, Eoberts and ■ Co., report that they submitted a catalogue of 400 hideß. .ffll lots hot selected by tanners at Government schedule- priccs, and left ti open competition, .met with an extremely keen demand fromVexportei'B at prices from >d. to.lid.'-per.lb. over late rates. Light-weigh-ox. soid at-,up to 133 d., ■and super-conditioned.-cows..;.up.,to lijd. per lb. Yearlings; made'up to .l&jd. per lb. This, as regards producers, is:a very unfortunate position, especially in view of the fact that the Australian restrictions in regard to hides have beon lately, withdrawn, and all hides in the Commonwealth are now submitted under free competition. . The, demand for tallow was very •keen,, and otlcbb advanced sharply. Messrs. Abraham; and Williams, Ltd., offered a large-catalogue of hides and tallow. Tanners cleared the bulk of their catalogue at the Government schedule rates, whilst the balance of hides which they"'left again elicited 'very keon competition at far higher, prices. than the ■ sohedule rates.' - Tallow was ill keen demand at higher values.. The whole calnloctue wan cleared at satisfactory prices. The Wairarapa Farmers'. Co-operative Association, Ltd., in which is incorporated the United Farmers' 00-operative Association, reported competition was brialt for lines. submitted.
