THE TURF

OTAEI MEETING KILRUSn AND ASTINOME WIN PRINCIPAL EVENTS. '. Heavy rain overnight made the course a trifle holding for-1 he second day's racing at Olaki. The sport was again very keen, and somo line finishes were witiicssml. Mr. A. Gordon officiated «s stipendiary,'but had an easy time of it. The attendance was not so large as o» the first day, but there was spirited speculation. March On was withdrawn from the opening event, which puzzled hackers considerably, and several of the runners were freely supported. At the jump, oft" Beloved and Tomikohe were first, away, uith Restful at the.head of the others. Prince Eormby • and Stutter became prominent nt the turn, and at the distance they wore in a line with the leaders. A.'good finish, saw Prince Forinby -win by a hall' length, with the other two in a line. . The judge placed Tomikohe second and Beloved third, with Stutter next.

For the Steeplechase, Gang Awa' was a few pounds bettter favourite than Master Webster, with '-hvynne third choice. The public was on the mark this time, as the trio were fn the picture the wholo way. Gang Awa' set a fast pace, -but Master Webster and Gwynne kept him at it. and the top-weight did not get a spell.- Three furlongs from homo he made a faulty jump, and the other pair passed him. Gwynne ami Master Webster rose at the last fence together, and Master Webster won in the run home by- two lengths. Gang Ana' was several luugths away. Ktirapai and Uoatu wore the only otiiurs to finish. The iluia Handicap was another puzzle for backers, eight of the runners being evenly bucked. The race was an easything for Kilrush, who got out first and led the whole way. Bagdad was always in second place, and the bracketed pair finished next. Going-, along the back, Arrowfield got on to the heels of Rewi Poto and came down. His rider escaped with some bruisers and a shaking. Bewi Poto, Nobleman, and Battlo Song all shaped badly.. Marqueleur, who struck himself while competing in the Cup, was withdrawn. After a long s—rs of failures, backers of tho favourite had a winning turn,in the Stewards' Hack Hnndicap, when Old Gold, who was at a short price, just scraped home from March On and Tari. At the start the last-named led from Festival. Down the back, March On and Idle Talk moved up behind Tari. ' March On -and Tari were clear as they entered the straight, but the favourite was coming fast, and in a good finish he just got there from March On. Tari was a neck away, and then came Consultation.

The Knluii Handicap fiokl was not a stron;,' one. Oratress and Astinome were the best backed, and they finished in the place.?. The start was delayed a considerable time, and when the tapes went up. Astinome shot aut, and led all the way. She won very easily by 1 three ■lengths from Oratress, who just beat Matatua. lady General was fourth. - The winner has raced most consistently of late, and since Easter she has only once, been out of a place in eight starts. Sho lias been a great bargain for hor present owner, who picked her up as a yeni'ling for Signs. All the acceptors sorted in tlio Hack Welter .Handicap. Ulentour, a placegetter on the first day, was it the shortest price, but after a very fine struggle he was beaten out of a place. Toddy made the early running from Whilo Banger and the favourite. Entering the straight, the latter ■ and Pretty Hobby took charge, and Justification also joined in. A very fine finish saw Pretty Hobby b?at Justification by a head, with White Blaze and Gientour in a line. The winner was a hot favourite, yesterday, but to-day no was neglected on the machine. Before the race JI. Lorigan complained that he had been retained to ride Glentonr, but had been superseded. The Judicial Committee ordered tho owner of tlio liorso to pay Lorigan a losing fee.

The concluding event went to Dainty, Step, a hot order, who led all thfi way. DETAILS OF THE RACING. Hy Telegraph.—l'rens Annotation. Otaki. June 1.
