ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION

SOUTH AFRICAN EXPEDITION PROPOSED. Some information regarding the proposed South .African expedition lo tho AntHrctic is contained in a letter received by ■Dγ. J. Allan Thomson, Director of the Dominion Museum, from Professor E. J. Goddard, of the Stellenbosch University. Professor Goddard is to lead tbe expedition, which will undertnko the examination of a wide stretch of Antarctic coastline, and will at the same time carry out various scientific investigations. Professor Goddard states that he has made arrangements for the expedition, which he expects will leave Cape Town in December of next year. Ho will have two ships, which will visit Australia early in 1921 on their way to'the south. The* expedition will make an extensive oceanogiaphical survey between Africa and the Antarctic, and will try to map the const between Endcrby Land and '(,'outs Land.

The collection of scientific specimens on ft large scale forms part of the programme, anil Professor Goddard trill hand the brachiopoda to Dr. Thomson for examination and classification. l)r. Thomson is a recognised authority en this subject, and he handled the brachiopoda. collected by the Australian Antarctic Expedition, led by Sir Douglas Unwsou.

Professor Goddard is an Australian. He held the M'Leay Fellowship in Sydney in-1910; and later accepted hie present position in tho South African Univorsity.
