The Luckenbach chartered steamer Comet has been' within Wireless range of Auckland since Wednesday last, but so far no message has been received as to when alio will reach that port. NIAGARA NOT GOING TO SYDNEY.' By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, June 2. It is understood that the steamer Niagara, will not procced to Sydney owing to tho skipping strike, but will ltmain at Auckland until Juno 10, whon 6ho will return to Vancouver. The steamer Mocraki, which has been waiting at Auckland for some time, will take the Niagara s passengers to Sydney, and will probably sail 011 Wednesday.
THE KAIIU FOE GHATHAMS. V The statement published in Wellington yesterday to the effect that the. Kahu ia not to bo dispatched to the Chatham Islands this week is contrary to fact. The .Chatham Islands Fishing Company announced last evening that thoy would (jet the Kahu away for the Challiams (making oalls'at Waitangi, Owenga, and Whangaroa), on Friday—a day later than first announced, tho Kahu having been hampered on the East Coas| by bad weather. MISHAP TO THE KAPUNI. Tho river steamer Kapuni, 188 tons, in . charge of Captain Gibson, met with a. mishap when leaving Patea at tho week-end. She came in contact with the breakwater, yiiich caused the vessel to leak. She put in to Waugamii yesterday, and the damage will, not be ascertainable till tho cheese, of -which sho has a shipment for tho liaranga, is takeji from her hold. Oaptain Y. Johanson, superintendent of the South Taranaki Shipping Company, stated last night that he thought tho damage was alight. A Press Association telegram from Wanganui states that the Kapuni put in leaking badly. The vessel is being temporarily repaired. Sho will proceed t.o Wellington probably to-day. ner cargo of cheese, which was undamaged, has been transhipped to tho Hawora.
NIAGAEA FROM VANCOUVEE. The Itoyal mail steamer Niagara arrived at Auckland iroui Vancouver, via Island ports, on .Friday afternoon. She had a passenger list ol over £00 persons, and the medical inspection entailed the taking of approximately SCO temperatures, an operation whioli was performed in about two hours, reports tho "Star." The vessel berthed about six o'clock, but it was closo oil eignt before the Customs formalities had been carried out. and rassengers allowed asflore. .The trip was uneventful, though in the initial stages of the journey a southerly gale was met with, the weather afterwards being favourable. Tho Commonwealth and Dominion Line nave received tile following advice as to tho movements of three of their vessels:"Owing to delay in the delivery by tho builders, the. now s.s.' Port Nicholson is now scheduled to sail from New York for Australian ports only. Her placo on the loading berth for Auckland and Wellington is being taken by tho Port Victor. "Two further steamers are to load in New York for Australian and New Zealand porta during this month. They are the Port Aligusta and Port Elliot, but their ports of dischnrgo have not yet been nxed." DEVON AT JiYTTELTON. Tho Federal-Shire steamer Devon, with troops on board, arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning from Egypt, via Newcastle. She will probably leave Lyttelton for this port next Wednesday, Juno 11. INTERCOLONIAL TRADE. Nothing new in connection with the running of the intercolonial boats waß known by either tho Union Company or by Hud-dart-Parker, Ltd.. yesterday. The Manuka proceeded south last night to complete l;pr disoharge. Another boat affected is tho Niagara, which is at Auckland, but her future movements are also unknown. CABLE BUOYS. The commander .of the cable ship Iris reported to the Secretary of Marine (Mr. G. Allport) yesterday that ho had laid a cable fiuoy in latitude 39.26 S., longitudo 171.50 E. Ho also reported that sovoral other buoyß would be used in the vicinitj till the ciibles had been repaired. THE HINEMOA. TJis liglithouso tender Hinemoa is at present in Auckland. She is to leavo thero to-morrow for Cuvier Island and the gulf lighthouses. She will return to Auckland the following Wednesday and load stores for the northern lighthouses, leaving the. same day for the xorth. OUTWARD SAILINGS. ARRIVALS AT HOME. . Two Shaw-Savill liners reached London last month within a week of each other. They were tho Suevic, which left Auckland </ii March 4 for London, via Bombay, and which arrived at her destination on May 12, and the Mamari. which cleared ■Wellington on March 29. for London, via Bombay, and arrived at Home on May 19. SHAW-SAVILL BOATS. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company reported yesterday that tho Raranga was still at Napier,. and was to have left thero last night or to-day for Gisborne. The Kia Ora waa finishing her loading at Waitara, and was leaving for New Plymouth that evening. Both tho Arawa and Pakeha were at Lyttelton, tho latter unloading her cargo of American coal. AVAIAIANA REPORTED. The Waimana left Colon cn May 29 on her way out irom the United Kingdom. She ia duo at Auckland on June 21. THE KOHALA. Tho barquentiiie Kohala, which brought to this port, a, cargo of salt and gypsum . from Adelaide, is to sail in ballast tomorrow- for Euroka, California. On arrival at lier home port she will load backto Sydney. MOANA'S DEPARTURE. One day later than was flrsS announced tho It.M.S. Moana 1b to leave Wellington on Friday, next, at 5 o'clock. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Commander Hooper, of tho training-Bhip Amokura, iB leaving Wellington on June 17 for England. During his absence Mr. Barnsdalo, chief officer, will take charge of the vessel. Captain Hawker, of tho Midilleham Castle, is at present in a private hospital. He expects to be able to resumo duty in a week. Mr. A. SI Smith, w'ireless operator on tho Itokoia, has come ashore, and his placo is to bo taken by Mr, T. M. Davidson. Mr. F. W. Neev formerly third officer on the Whangape, has signed on tho Wanaka' in a similar capacity. Mr. A. Smith, wireless operator, has been appointed to the. Manuka in placo of Mr. J. liutton, who has signed off the articles. Tho following vessels wore expected to bo within vango of Auoklond Radio last night:—Flora, Kaituna, Eimutaka, and Western Comet. To-day, being tho King s Birthday, tho Mararoa nii'd Nikau will not rcceivo cargo. The Badon .Powell went oil tho slip yesterday to ■ have a new mast litted. Sho is now scheduled to sail on Thursday for New Plymouth. Tho ICahika is to leavo Onehunga tlua afternoon for New Plymouth. Owing to delay by bad weather, tho Policrua will not leave Lyttelton tiu tomorrow.
The Mokoia, which left port for Dunedii) direct last night, will leavo Dunedin on the return journey on Friday, calling at Lyttelton. .There is a possibility of her missing Wellington this trip, proceeding from Lyttelton to Auckland, via .Napier and Gisborne.
Nono of the Blackball Company's boats are to visit Wellington this week. The Ngahcro and the Ngatoro are on tho East Coast, whilst tho Ngaknta is at present at Newcastle. The P.O.S.N. Company's liners China and Kaiser-i-Hlnd are to leavo Sydney in July for London. The Wakatu left port at an early hour yesterday morning for Kaikoura aud Lyt-tclt-on. At tho latter port she is to go into, dock. Ah arrival from Gisborne yesterday was the Hippie. Sho is set down to sail for Napier, Gisborne, aud Akitio on Wednesday. Bound from San Francisco to Napier, the wooden schooner King Cyrus left the former port on May 16. She is bringing a cargo of case oil. The "London Gazette" published on Maroli 24 contained an Order-in-Couneil providing for tho insertion in the Defence oi the Realm Regulations of a new regulation (No. 37 D), the substance, 9f which was thai no person, unless specially authorised by the 'Admiralty or Board of Trade, should act as master or person in charge of a British merchant, ship unless he was. a natural-born British subject, and tho son of parents both of whom at the time of his birth were cither natural-born British subjects or British subjects by naturalisation.
Great changcs are taking place in transAtlantic travel, Bays an exchange. New construction to replace tho liners sunk by the U-boats is taking the form of a standard vessel of about 20,000 tons, with a combination of passenger and cargo-carry-ing capacity. No new leviathans of tho typo of the torpedoed White Star liner Britannic, of 43,003 tons pross register, and tho Cunard liner Lusitania,. 32,000 tons, class are being built to replace the lost tonnage. The White Star had under construction tho Homeric, 30,000 tons, when war broke out, but apart from this single exception tho building of "great liners is not lntonded.
