MANAWATU

The dairy factories in Taranaki Province, having decided to semi' Messrs. Forsyth and Murdoch to America to inquire into matters conneclcd with tho dairy industry, and more especially into the question of the utilisation of by-pro-ducts, the suggestion was niado that tho companies in Wellington Proviuco should bo allowed to join in. With this object

in view a meeting representing a num. ber of factories in this provinco was convened at Palmei'stou North. At tho meeting Mr. J. D. Drown was voted to tho chair, and explained that in order that a compauy should be ablo to partici. pa to in the advantages which would aecruo through the two delegates going to America it would be necessary that they should participate in the nccessary cost of the delegates' visit. The executive, which had its headquarters in Taranaki, consisted of seven members, and taking two tons of cheese as equal to one tou of butter the basis of Taranaki's contribution would be 20,000 tons of cheese. Wellington's quota was equal to 5800 tons, and this would ontitlo tho daily companies iu this provinco to tiro members on the executive. It had been decided- that the maximum contribution was to be 2s. per tou on checso and is. per ton on butter. Mr. O. H. Buckeridgo (Hawera) had been appointed treasurer, and arrangements were being mado for the collection of the levy. If there should be a surplus remaining it would bo divided amongst tho companies contributing. The following factories in tho Wellington district had agreed to contribute

towards the cost of the delegates: Hopelands, Pahlatua, Mai-ima, Mangnliao, Kaituna, • Woodville, Kongomai, Lakevieiv, Featherston, United, Kiverbank, Kaiparoro, Maharahara, Tataramoa, Now. man, Kuku, North Tirauinea, Norsewood. Ivakotau, iNireimlnv, Greytown, Daletield, I'arkvale, Newbury, Levin, and Shannon. It was decided to join in with tho Taranaki ocmpanies, and Mr. Paviour Smith being tho only person nominated w;as elected as one member of the executive to represent Wellington Provinco. At the annual meeting of the Palmerstou North Licensing Committee yesterday the police report was favourable as to the conduct of all tho hotels. Tho condition of tho Masonic was the subject of some comment in the report. It was. explained that tho leaso of the licensee, Mr. Parish, had expired, and ho was now only a. monthly tenant. Tho owner would bo retaking possession at Intend of the present'month. The application was adjourned for three months, in which time repairs are to be carried out. Regarding the Princess Hotel, after con-, sideration the chairman said that the committee was not altogether satisfied with the hotel. The furnishing appeared to bo insufficient for the public lise. Tho application was adjourned for tlirco months, tho whole place to undergo somo renovation, particularly with reference to the furniture.

The Hounds will meet at Parorangi■ on' Saturday next. Thco-opening of the hockey season for 'Saturday lady players took,place at the High School grounds 011 Saturday ill beautiful weather. The game between Technical .School A mid iiosco was a well-fought one, and resulted in a win for Technical School by I! goals to nil. High School Old Girls had a decisive win over ..Technical School A by : -5 gwils to nil. Ideal weather prevailed on Saturday, when the Manawatu Kugbv Union's com--petitinns were advanced another stage. In the senior grade High School, who journeyed to Peihling, returned home witli a victory to' the tune of li points to ,1, after a clean, well-fought game. As regards the remaining senior fixture, Western United beat Pirates B by 1G lo nil, whilo Awaliuri were defeated by Huia after a very even game by 17 to 15. Other resuits were:—Juniors: Jackeytqwn .(II) beat Ash hurst (5); Western United (27) beat High School (!1); K.ia. Toa (11) beat Iluia (<]). Third Grade: AVestem United (37) beat Combined Primary Schools (0). A team of golf players from Manawatu visited Otaki 011 Saturday, when a match was played with 1110 Otaki Club. Tha match resulted in a draw, each side registering four ]wins, while three matches were halved. The following are the re. suits: A. Barraud (II.) beat P. C. Kirk (O.); A. AA'interburn (O.) beat TV. Seifert (If.); Griffiths (O.) beat P. C. Freetli (J!.); Hopkins (O.) beat Pavitt (,M.); Brown (O.) beat." A. M'Hardy (M.); Kaploy (51.)' beat Hedditch (O.); Newenham (Si.) halved with B. SimcDx (0.); H. l'reeth (51.) beat W. 51. Simcox (0.); AV. F. Bendall (11.) halved with 51'Konzio (0.); P. Collinson (XI.)- beat Podcvin (0.); E.
