THE PAKEHA TRAGEDY —- \- * MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE Arising out of the tragedy on the troopship l'ukeha on Hay .20, Edward George Furlong Marsden, sergeant, N.Z, Field Artillery, was charged before Jlr. 1'; V. Fraz.er, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday with unlawfully killing Samuel Stanley Choate, sergeant-major, "thereby committing the crime of manslaughter. J Cnief-Detective Boddam; asked for a,remand till June 4, and this was agreed to by Mr. H. F. 0 Leary, oii behalf of the accused, and was granted. Tringhani appeared on behalf of tho complainant, wllo stated that she had been married to the defendant for three months, during which tiino lie had failed to provido her with adequate maintenance. Defendant wore a uniform -without badges, and in reply to His Worship said that lie was discharged' and received a pension of Jti fo. Sd. per month. He was unable to work. .Mr. Tringhani stated that the defendant had been travelling around with d circus. His Worship suggested that the parties might come to an agreement, but Mrs. .Payne was unable to accept- this. A separation order was granted, and defendant was ordered to pay J2l per week towards the support of his wife and to pay solicitor's fee, JJI Is. John Gordon, whose arrears in respect of a maintenance order amounted to Jil2 125., was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in t[ie Auckland.prison;.warrant to be suspended for M days, Defendant was also ordered to pay solicitor's fee, -CI Is.
