The Hon. W. H.lHerries left yesterday for Auckland. He expects to return to Wellington about the end of the week. The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald has gone to the South Island on a visit to Invercargill and Dunedin. The Hon. J. A. Hanan is leaving for the south to-night. Mr. H. A. Jlversleigh, for many years a clerical employee of the Wellington City Council, and latterly on the staff oi' the city solicitor, died on Saturday morning, after an illness extending over twelve months. The deceased, who was G2 years of age, leaves a widow, a daughter (Mrs. Mears), and a son. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, 'the' interment being made/ at the Karori Cemetery. 'Those present included Mr. John O'Shea- (city solicitor), Mr. James Ames (city valuer), and Mr. J. E. Palmer (Town Clerk)," who represented the Mayor and City Council. The Yen. Archdeacon Johnson officiated at the graveside.
Mr. C. H. HowflTth, consulting cn"ineer, of Wellington, and an artist of repute, left for England and America by the. lonic last week, accompanied by Mrs. Howarth. It is his intention to give exhibitions of his paintings of New Zealand scenery (chiefly scenes of tho Jit. Cook district, the AVanganui River, and tho themflal regions) in London and lNew York, and with that end in view ho has taken with him a large and thoroughly representative collection of his works.
Mai or (temporarily Lieutenant-Colonel) Ivon T. Standisb. C.M.G., D.5.0., Royal New Zealand Artillery, has been appointed Director of Artillery (Field) and officer commanding the regiment of Royal Nfeiv Zoaland Artillery.
Captain N. W. B. B. Thoms, D.5.0., M C N.Z. Staff Corps, has been appointed Assistant Military Secretary (temporarily) New Zealand Military Forces, and retains; tho rank of major (temporarily) whilst so employed. Ho succeeds Lieu-tenant-Colonel (temporarily) D. B. Blair, D.5.0., M.C., New Zealand Stall Corps, who has relinquished tho appointment of Assistant-Military Secretary and Aidc-de-Cnmp to tho Commandant.
Tho remains of the iato Mr. Edward Anderson wore interred at J\arori Cemotery yesterday afternoon. Prior to tho funeral, which was of a private nature, leaving for iliu cemetery, a funeral serwas conducted in St. Peter's Church bv the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott), who was assisted by the Venerablo Archdeacon Watson. A number of clergy wore present in tho body of the church, including Canon Feldcn Taylor, tho Venerablo Archdeacon Johnson, and tho Rev. Alfred Williams, of tho Maori Mission. Mr. S. 13. Shortt played the Funeral March. • The service at tho graveside was conducted by the Rov. 11. Payne, of ICclburn. and the vestry and churchwardens of St. Peter's Church acted as pall-bearers. Amongst those present at tho funeral wero Messrs. E. Millward Anderson. Norman Anderson, Sclwyn Anderson, and Maurice Anderson, sons of tho deceased, Messrs. W. H. Millward, R. Wilberfoss, and T. F. Martin, brothors-in-law, and Messrs. David and, Ernest Anderson, nephews.
Mr. J. G| Coates, M.P., who lately has returned from active service, was accorded an enthusiastic welcome at a public gathering at Helensville 011 Thursday evening. The chairman of l:ho Town Board, -Mr. J. Stewart, presided over a large attendance. Several speakers, including Mr. C. J. Parr, M.Pi., paid warm tributes to tho many good qualities of Major Coates and the creditable part he had takeii in the war.
Captain C. E. -Blayncy, late squadron commander, Royal Air Force, has been appointed to the charge of the motor department of the N.Z. Farmers' Co-opera, five Distributing Company, Ltd., AVelliiigton, and will take up his duties about the middle of this month. It is announced that Lieutenant F. G. Matthews, private secretary to the Minister of Defence, has been granted the honourary rank of captain while so employed. Captain Matthews recently returned from actife service. The council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants has unanimously appointed Major Donald Gordon Johnston to the position of secretary of-the society rondcred vacant by tlfc resignation of Mr. Ernest W. Hunt. MajorJohnston, who is an associate of both the New Zealand Society of Accountants and tho Incorporated of Accountants of New Zealand, left New Zealand in 1915 with a commission as lieutenant in tho New Zealand Field Artillery. and has been continuously on active service with the Now Zealand Division since that date. He returned to the Dominion as officer in chargo of tho troops 011 tho'troopship Arawa nn May 15.
Corporal Dick Harris, formerly well known in Press circles in Wellington and Ohristcluirch, returned from England by tliu transport Rimutalc.-i. Ho was with the N.Z.E.F. in France from Messines up till just before" tho retaking of Bapaume (when he was on leave), and was slightly wounded as the result of a shell explosion. Tho Rev. W. M'Ara, who has been minister in chargo of tho Kaikoura parish for 41 years, has resigned. Tho Neleon Presbytery has recorded its appreciation of the work of Mr. M'Ara. and has decided to ask tho General Assembly to grant him the status of minister emeritus, with a seat on tho church sourts. Major Guy Featherston, D.5.0.,' M.C., formerly of Auckland, who has ><cen appointed H.M. i'JL'rade Commissioner tt Sydney, left England early in April to take up his new duties. On severing his connection with the Tokomaru School last week Mr. J. S. Webb, the head tcaoher, was -presented at a valedictory function held in the school with a mohair rug and a case of pipes. A farewell tolcen, in the shape of a purse of sovereigns, was also presented to Mrs. Wobb. Felicitary speeches were • made, and Mr. Webb was accorded tho good wishes of the district in his new appointment as first assistant roaster at Newtown School, where lie took up his new duties yesterday. Mr. Webb was also entertained by Lodge Manawatu Kilwinning on Thursday last, receiving as a parting token of esteem two volumes of poems, handsomely bound and engraved.
Mr. James Macdonald, .who bccamo Assistant-General Manager of New Zealand Railways on April 30, in succession to Mr. E. W. MTill.v, wns born in Scotland in 1862, and came to New Zealand as a boy with his jiarents, and joined the railway service in December, 1876, at Christchurch. Mr, Macdonald has gone through all the stages of promotion—cadet. clerk, and stationiuaster in different districts, and ho was appointed traffic inspector, Dunedin, in 1896. In 1902 he became traffic clerk at Invercargill; in 1911 he was appointed stationmaster, Wellington; he became ■ chief clerk of tho accountants' branch of tho Head Office in 1918; succeeded the late Mr. Davidson as chief accountant in 1915, holding this position until his present promotion.
Mr. J. B. Mawson, M.A., of tho Welton College staff, ha 3 been appointed-an assistant master of the Southland Boys' Hich School. Mr. W. G. Aldridge, senior assistant of the Chri'stehurch Technical College, has been appointed director of the Southland Technical College out of twenty applicants. A Press Association message from Christchurch states that Major J. B. Hine, M.P. for Stratford,,has returned to New Zealand by the steamer Devon, which arrived at Lyttelton yesterday. Mr. W. Thomas, of the Dominion Laboratory staff, has been granted six months' leave of absence, and is a.passenger for London by tho lonic, which •left Wellington last week. He is going Home partly on business and.partly on pleasure. . Before he left Wellington ho was presented by the members of tho Laboratory staff (through Dr. Muclaurin, tho Dominion Analyst), with a. goldmounted fountain pen. Cablod advice lias been received by Mr. J. Varnham, of Hohiria Eoad, Hataitai, that his eon, Captain P. S. Varnham, ILC., is returning by- the s.s. Prinzessin. Captain Varnham left as a second lieutenant with the Fourth Reinforcements, and saw service at Gallipoli until the evacuation, afterwards going to the Western front, whence ha remained until leaving Cologne in March last.
