ORGAN RECITAL

The recital given in the Town Hall oil Saturday night by the City Organist (Mr. Bernard Page) drew a email audience. The certainly was no measure of tiie. merit of the mueic that Jlr. Page provided, and it was surprising to find so few of the music-loving people of Wellington assembled to hear the City Organist, even when allowance had been made for u counter musioftl attraotion. The programme included the Toccata and Fugue in C Major (Bach), an interesting example of the Italian three movement concerto form; Walther's "Prize Song' (from Act 3 of Wagner's "Die MoieterBingor"), a famous composition of extraordinary beauty; and the Prelude to Act 1 of "Tristan nnd Isolde" (Wngner), described as the greatest love' tragedy that has ever been written. These important numbers were played with skill and understanding. The programme opened wth the overture k "Coriolan" (Beethoven) and contained also the andante movement from Debussy's String Quartet, "Chant du Matin" (Guilmant), and, <w a request number, Cesar Franck's Lento and Andantino in E Flat. Mr. Pace's neit recital will be given on the evening of Saturday, June 7.
