THE TURF

AUCKLAND MEETING

BIG HURDLES WON BY CYNIC,

ALTERATION WINS CORNWALL HANDICAP.

By Telegraph—Spocial Correspondent. Auckland, May 31. The extraordinary good luck which the Auckland Racing Club. has enjoyed in | regard to the weather did not desert them to-dav, when the first days pvtntsi o. the Steeplechase Meeting were run Aftei a wet week the weather broke lino today, and tho sun shone brightly throughout. The going was holding, but not. slushy. There was a large attendance. The totalisator handled .£60,238 against .£50,453 on the corresponding day last JC \'field of six faced the starter for the Maiden Steeplechase Bore and tenacious being the public fancies, lellow and White made the running at the start and soon established a big lend, »ut he tell at the first post and rails coming down the hill. The contest then resolved itself into a three-horse race between Bore. Ulster and Tenacious. With a mile and a half gone Ulster was well in iron., with Tenacious and Bore lying lwndy. Half a mile from home it, looked like Ulster's race, but Bore and Tenacious then moved up. and the three entered the straight in a bunch. Tenacious then drew awar. but Ulster clung to him all the last, Tenacious winning by less than a. length, with Bore a couple of lengths awav, third. . •, No fewer than thirty-six horses ranged themselves behind the tapes in tho Jorvois Handicap, Hallow with Gray on his back, being the favourite.. ith distance gone, Comedy Prince sorted hini. self out from the crowd and lemaincd in the lead to the finish, winning easily bv several lengths. Hineamaru and Oath, erer made a good race for second place, the former having the best of it by about a. length. , , . There were eleven starters in the Maiden Hurdle Race. After the field had titled down, Garryowen and Minister tonic the lead, and Reformation made ■" move to the front. Munster fell, and Garryowen and Reformation then drew awav from the others, racing side by side. Half a mile from home Lochella came at the leaders, and was/ only a couple of lengths 'behind as the last hurdUs i m negotiated. Garryowen maintained his lead and won comfortably from Reform*, tion, who finished a couplo of lengths m front of Lochella. Orpheum fell. Tho Great Northern Hurdle Race produced a brilliant field of nine. Sleight of Hand going out a pronounced favourite, but others were well backed, fe Onga and Thrace were the first to show out in front, but the field kept well together. Thrace retained his position, but lo Onga gradually fell back. With half a mile gone, Cynic struck a liurde and fell into last position, and it looked as tf he had lost his chance. After a mile hart been traversed Euripos came up olongsisifl Tharce, and a little further on Master Lupin improved his position, Paraoa also moving up. Sleight of Hand, who had been holding a handy place, fell about amile from home, and soon afterward? I'araoa also came down. With halt a mile still to go. Master Lupin made another improvement in his position, but Gvnie had been going through the tieul iii tine stvle, and was first over the last iump, closelv followed by Thrace and Master Lupin. Thrace put in a game challenge, but Cynic was not to be denied, and passed the winning post a full length in'front of Thrace. Cymes win was lint altogether a surprise. Ho has tho pace and the breeding, and the only question wjis whether he could negotiate tho' hurdles comfortably. His Jumping ai Avondale wa? for from brilliant, but he lias improved greatly 6ince then, and there was a very genera\ feeling that lie would run a fine race to-day. Kuikora fel> at Hie Inst hurdle, and Colonel Soult walked in lame. While Maze and Bedford headed the field for the greater part of the Cornwall Handicap, but Alteration came with a great rush a quarter of a milo from home and won decisively. Mangamahoe. who had been running at tho tail end ot the field for most of the journey, shot forward'like a rocket as the field turned into Ihe straight, and beat Bedford for second place. Just a dozen horses breasted the tapes for the Hunt Club Hurdles. Tho raco was fought between Benzine and Swastika, tlio former winning with a good deal to spare. The Members' Handicap was won by Mill o' Gowrie, who got--away "smartly and was never headed.
