The proceedings at the Magistrate's Court on. Saturday were presided over by Mr. P. V. Frazer, S.M. ...A fireman named Alfred Holnian, belonging to the steamer 'Pakeha, was charged with stealing two blankets, valued' at .£2 175., belonging to the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. ! Accused was seen by a Customs officei coming off.tho vessel with a largo kitbag under hi? arm. Questioned us to what' he'had in the bag, accused said lie had some blankets for a friend on tho 'lonic. He said the blankets had been given to him by a soldier, whoso washing he had dono on .the voyage. A fine of ,£l, with oosts 10s., in default 72 hours' imprisonment, was imposed. ' A young man named Sydney John Neleon, pleaded not guilty to a charge of being a rogue and vagabond, having been found by night in the dwellinghouse-of Nathan Wolfe, 132 Taranaki Street. It appeared that Nelson' was found at 10.30 p.m. on Friday on Wolfe's promises, and when questioned for an explanation said that he was looking for his. wife. Subsequently, he said that ha did not have a wife. _ . i In the course of evidence, accused said he had been in New Zealand for four months,.and.had been working for only six weeks of that time. He i came from Australia and was a professional boxer. Of. late, ho had been in the Army Service Corps. He admitted that the woman he had been keeping company with was of evil repute. Accused was convicted and remanded for sentence until June' 7.
Samuel Lockhart Gilmer was charged with haYinpr. on May 30, forged the name of Samuel Gilmer to a cheque for ,£SO, drawn on the National Bunk of New Zealand, with intent that it he acted upon as genuine.
Accused irad remanded until June 4, bail being- allowed, two sureties of .£SO each, and one of .£IOO.
