NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES MANAWATU When taking over tho gasworks at Palmerston North from the company which formerly owned them , the Borough Council found that the consumption nf gas whs increasing so rapidly that the present gas-holder would bo inadequate for all requirements. A contract was entered into, for tho erection of a new holder, but owing to the war certain portions of steel required were not allowed bv the Priority Board in London to be shipped out of England. Consequently the matter has had to stand over,' and further arrangements liavo now been made by the .council for Hie erefftion of a three-lift holder, of ualf-inil-lion capacity, at an estimated cost of <£24.250. Tt is exw.c-tod that the work of erecting this will be completed within the next 18 months. The cost of the structure is included in the loan which was carried for the purchase and extension of the works. The question of new vertical retorts will come up for decision at the next meeting of the council. Mrs. J. Henderson, of David Street. Palmerston North, has received advice (hat her son, Private Robert Henderson, of Ihe 2-llh Australian Battalion, who' lias been absent for four years on active service, is returning to Australia at the end of this month.
