ELLERSLIE NOTES. By Telegraph—Pitss As=oclMlon. Auckland, May 30. Speedwell Mac was yesterday scratched for all engagements. Sir Fisher is looked upon as a doubtful starter in tho Great Northern Hurdles. All the other horses engaged in that race worked, this morning. Euripos has ono hind leg very much swollen, as the result of a kick at Wangamii iuid in concussion with 'hurdles there, and, though walking sound, tho leg is a source of anxiety to the trainer. Cynic, who came'into favour yesterday through a good jumping display, seemed a little sore this morning, 'but there is nothing seriously amiss.' Waimai and Troublesome command much attention for the Steeplechase, and if Master Lupin and Sleight >f Hand distinguish themselves or run f.iiibfnctorily in tho Hurdles, the better of the pair, if started in the Steeplechase, way Teceive a great deal of support. . RE-HANDICAPS FOR ,OTAKI. , The re-handicaps of winners at Carterton for ■ the Otago Meeting have been declared as follow:—Flying Hack ■Handi-cap-Tari (31b.), Bst . 101b. Taipua Handicap-Potentiality (51b.), Bst. Birthday Welter Handicap-Some Girl, (olb.), 83tvl21b; ■ " NOT A PROTEST. WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MAIDEN RACE AT TARATAHI. Mr. T. B. Dwan, one of the owners of American Beauty, writes'to contradict the statement that the owners of the horse which ran second in the Maiden Race tit Taratahi .protested, and. that, the protest was dismissed. Mr. Dwan also considers that our correspondent also created a wrong impression ,by saying that the winner, Parorangi, led nearly all the way. "The-truth of the matter," Mr. Dwan etates, "is that the owners of the second horse did not protest, although I was -present. The -stipendiary steward, Mr. Gordon, who saw tho crossing and bunjping lit the turn, moved for a special inquiry into the matter, and the committee had the two riders up, and it was ndmitted that the winner had crossed.and bumped the second horse at the turn and that she was knocked back four or,live lengths. She came back again on the ■ outside of tho winner and was crossed and bumped'and carried out into the middle of' the course. It was not the fault of the ridors, but the winner was in great distress and -under severe punishment, to keep lie place,' ae he was fairly done'at tho turn and could not have won the race except for crossing ami bumping. The stewards wore perfectly satisfied that the interference took place, but gave tho extraordinary decision that it would make no difference to the rwult of tho Tace and they would not disturb the verdict of the judge. This decision of tho committee "should be brought beforo tho Racing Conference, and I would recommend the Minister in Charge of Racing Permits to consider seriously before he' grants another permit to this' club. What is the use of owners racing straight and giving tho public' a run every time for their money to be treated like this? Racing is ' approaching a perilous position in the Dominion, and something will have to be doud to protect the owners. I found no fault with the rider of Parorangi, and ..consider it was tho horse's, fault owing to distress," ' ' . . ■
