*A YOUNG MAN'S TROUBLE ADDICTED TO DRINK : Tlie proceedings at the Magistrate's Court, yesterday were presided over by Mr. ,?. V. Eraser, S.M. The theft of two shirts, a razor, and two pairs of socks, valued at £2 is., the property of John O'Keefe, was confessed by a young man named George "Waterman. H was asserted by the police that accused's trouble was drink. On behalf of Watennan.it- was stated that ho had no recollection of the affair. Before ho went to tho war he did not drink, but since he returned about a year ago he had been on "one big drunk." Mr. G. W. Mellish, accused's counsel, suggested that the case might be..raet by the infliction of a fine and the issue of a prohibition order. Waterman, he said, was unable to work as his rijjht arm was useless and he was in receipt of a pension. . Accused was remanded for sentence for a'week,-inquiries to be made as to whether he' couM be placed' on a relative's farm in Maryborough. He was also prohibited. . . OTHER POLICE CASES.' A seaman named Albert Bergstrom was charged.'with having assaulted Captain Morris Jones, master of the Terpsichore, and with having used obscene language. It was stated that accused only came out of prison on Thursday. He obtained some liquor and went down to the Terpsichore, to which he belonged, and struck the captain. When being arrested he gave vent to his rage in a torrent of oaths. Bergstrom was sentenced nominally to two months' imprisonment, the understanding being that he is placeH aboard tho Whakatane when she leaves for England at the end of June. He refused to go aboard the Terpsichore, and the captain of that vessel also declined to take him back again. Georgo Farquihar Koss was charged with having begged aim? on Clyde Quay. In view of his condition he was remands ed for it week's medical treatment and observation. A young woman named Edna Langdon admitted the theft of a jersey coat, valued at c£3, and another garment valued at 7s. Gd,, the property of Kathleen Oliver. Accused , wae convicted and ordered to comu up fpr sentence within twelve months, oiycondition that she stays in Mount Magdalen Home for that period. For insobriety, Thomas Patrick M'Keuna was convicted and discharged. Eoderick M'Leod was. fined £1, in default 72 hours' detention, and prohibited, and three first offenders were each ordered to forfeit the amount of their bail, 10s. ' For failing to have a light on , a motoroar, Wilfrid Lankshear was ordered to pay costs amounting to 9s. W. G. Ormrod was ilned ,£3, with 7s. costs, in default fourteen days' detention, for failing to attend drill. William James M'Nally was ordered to find sureties of the peace for twelvo months in the sum of ,£2O for having used provoking lanugage to the city dog catcher. Mr. J. O'Shea, the City Solicitor, said the caso was a very bad one. Defendant went to the corporation yards', where his son's dog had been taken iby tho dog catcher, and abused tho official for capturing the animal. Ho used revolting language, and it was only due to ilie cuutrol which the dog catcher exercised over a. breach of the peace was avoided. La ura... Jackson, a milk vendor, was charged with selling.milk not up"to.'standard. Defendant said that shu received the milk from the City . Milk Supulj Company. She had tried to get milk direct from the municipal authorities, but they stated that they could not supply her. -Ilia Warship said tho case <ii<l not call for a heavy penalty as the offence was due to carelessness in leaving Ihe cans standing outsido the gate, A line of JS, with 7s. costs, was imposed. A charge against Walter Stanton of having been found in the Metropolitiji Motel after hours was dismissed. Mr. J. J. M'Grath appeared for defendant.
