THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS [By 'Gletoe.] Acceptances for all events at the Horowhonua meeting close on Friday night at 8 o'clock, with Secretary Walter Bull, Levin. ' Tho annual meeting of tho TaratahiCarterton Club will bo held on tho Olareville racecourse to-dny. Wellington visitors can travel north by tho mail train leaving Lambton Station at 7.50 a.m.. and the return journey can be made by train leaving Clarevillo at 5 p.m. Racing will commence at 11.30 a.m. The 'Members' Handicap, six furlongs, is. tho opening event, aud if started in this race instead of tho Cup, tho Hast-jngs-traiuod Tari will have plenty of supporters. Ho heat The Speaker at Hastings, and thon went to Wnipukurau and won again, while to make tho form read Ecod, The Speaker won a double at Trenthani aud scored at Awapuni also. There will bo several ecratchings in the Cup, but if started Potentiality, Multaine, and Matty should all givo good exhibitions. Two very useful two-year-olds in Prince Hal and Parorangi are included in the Trial Plate field. A position handy io the rails would probably mean the position of favourite for either of tho pair. Most of tho haclcs engaged in the C'artorton Hack Handicap will be sorely troubled to see out tho ten furlongs. Eniland has shown fair form, and Ethopian is supposed to have galloped well at Hastings on Thursday Inst. Tho Telegraph Handicap, five furlongs, has some useful sprinters engaged. Treiitham Roao and. Wonder are both quick beginners, and their pace will stand to them on the circular course. Elocutiou should show up in the open Welter Handicap, and Prince Formby reads well in the Electric Hack Handicap, which is run over a five-furlongs course. The Haiff Stakes, nine furlongs, a weight-for-ORo event, run at the Williamstown Peaco Meeting on May 10, Only drew three starters, viz., the West.raiian champion Mistico, Magpie, and Hoprig. Favouritism was divided between tho two first-named, and after a good race Mistico defeated the imported horse by a length, while Hoprig was beaten off. •At the same meeting Mr. W. R.' Kemball's' Explorer was started in the Peace Cupi one mile nnd a half, but. he wns not mentioned in tho market, and ran accordingly. The winner was Nightwatch; Files to hand. by last night's mail show that tho weather was wretched for Doncaster Day at Eandwick, and the attendance, which generally averages 00,000, fellawny to 22,000. Heavy rain fell every few minutes, but tho going did Dot affect the horses, and in most cases the favourites scored. News' by tho Sydney mail states that Mr. E. J. Watt's Pershore (All BlrickI'erseis) -was well-fancied for the fjires' ■Produce Stakes, won by Millieme,' but the colt cut up badly, aud was one of the last to finish. GlndfuiV sptoud place in the First Hurdle Race at-the Randwiclc meeting netted Mr. W. R. Kemball JBlflO. The New Zuaiander was riden by S. Reid, and he only got the position by a head after'a close finish with Monntwood. As tho track was very wet on Doncaster Day at Raudwiek the hurdles were placed on the outside of the course, so that the track 'would not be cut iip for the flnt' races. . By tjiis means the jumpers covered considerably more than the I tivo miles advertised as the distance of :the race. ...-.' It is understood that Bonyille' hns received a kick, and is an unlikely starter at the Taratahi meeting to-day. ' Millieme. winner of the Sires' Produce Stakes at the Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting, only cost 200gns. as a .yearling. . He started eight timps during the. -season, and was successful twico and i liir<l three times.
