WOMAN SMOKERS
In New York a sensation was caused in sccinl circles early in the year by dispatches from London stating that smoking is allowed among the girl students at Newnham College, and also in the Young Women's Christian Association centres. The news was the general topic of discussion among American women. The Vassar College Students' Council (New York), which is ,i body appointed by the students to govern their own conduct, havo just'decided against students being permitted to smoke. There is said to be a slight use of cigarettes privately at Vassar, but the habit is not general. Tho Y.W.C.A. officials say iliat any effort to introduce, thp smoking habit in their organisations in America would shock public sentiment, and could not possibly succeed. A recent effort to authorise smokintr anions men in Y.Jt.C.A.'s met with failure, despite tho claim that the Y.M.C.A. endorsed tho principle of smoking )>,-- soiling tota'eo at their army canteens with tho American troops in France.
