SYDNEY'S LATEST SENSATION '

—r—* SERIOUS CHARGES AGAINST A NEWSPAPER ALLEGED SPURIOUS ARTICLES The Sydney "Sunday Times" has gone to law against the "Sun" for publishing allegations to the effect that certain signed articles which had been appearing in tho "Sunday Times" as from Sir Douglas Haig, Marshal Jpffre, Lord French, and others were iot genuine contributions to the paper. Tho case will probably come on for hearing about December, but in the meantime the "Sunday Times" has applied to the Court to havo the defendants adjudged guilty of contempt of Court for publish, ing the following:— ' SIGNED ARTICLES. FURTHER REPUDIATIONS. MARSHAL HAIG'S CABLE. ("The Son's" Special Representative.) Paris, May 1. M. Clemenceau, of I ranee, after perusing the article in the "Sunday Times" ascribed to him, authorised me, through his secretary, M. , Mandel, to make the following announcement:— "H. Clemenceau neithei wrote norspoko the alleged article. It contains etatements wholly foreign to him. He has neither received nor written an article for any British, Australian, American journalist .or correspondent. He did not sign this article." ■

Marshal Joffre's article has unfortunately not arrived, but the veteran soldier,- after' probing his memory, says, "I cannot remember any incident which could, produce such an article." Why has not the "Sunday Times" published the cablegram sent to its editor several weeks ago by Field-Marshal -Siv Douglas Haig, in which Sir Douglas Haig rebukes the "Sunday Times" for publishing an article over his signature which was not written by him, and demanding that the offence should'not be repeated? - Lord Charles Beresford, after reading the article uttibuted to him, eaid: "1 am pretty certain I never wrote that. I hare written hundreds of articles, but I cannot recall anything like_ this. I certainly do not remember signing it."

Lord French's alleged contribution was Bent to him, and I have received the following, reply:— , Vice-Regal Lodge, "Dublin, "25/4/19. Sir,—l am directed by the LordLieutenant to inform you that His Excellency, knows nothing about the article in the Sydney _ "Sunday Times," whereof you submit a copy.
