DEFENCE DEPARTMENT
AND EMPLOYMENT FOE RETURNED SOLDIERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, May 28. Replying to statements regarding the employment of returned soldiers in the Defence Department, Sir James Allen said it had been the policy of the Department to give preference to capable, suitable returned soldiers of all ranks when filling positions in the Department, and.a periodical purging had been made in respect of men who were not returned soldiers. There had been no alteration recently in that policy. The recent speeding up in this matter of purging was duo to a number of fit meu arriving in tho Dominion, and the greater number of Staff Corps and Permanent Staff positions becoming available. Ho added: "General Richardson has not yet assumed hia duties as officer in charge of administration."
