"GOOD ROADS"
PROGRESS OP MANAWATU MOVBMKNT. (Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, May 27. Progress was reported at a meeting'of the I'iilmer.scun North Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening in connection wuli the "good roads" agitation recently started by that body. The secretary (Mr. U. M Kenzie) reported that 136 replies Imd been received in response to the chambers circular, soliciting.support in approaching the Government in the matter and suggesting some measure of Stale control. Jn all, 89 local bodies had endorsed the recommendation, while the remaining 47. had either received it or deferred the matter for further consideration. A number of .the replies coming within tho last-named category had stated that the matter was being'referred to tho Counties Association.
Mr. M. A: Eliott. pointed out that an analysis of the replies showed that the urban . bodies bad almost unanimously endorsed the resolution, while the rural bodies were fairly evenly divided on the question.
Mr. E. H. Crabb, who was in the chair, remarked that almost without exception all the local bodies agreed that something should be done. The chamber's main suggestion was that the work should be a national undertaking. Apparently everybody agreed that belter roads should be constructed, but the question of finance was the stumblingblock.
Mr.Freelhi/And while we are talking the Tarauaki people are acting. After further discussion it was, resolved to send.a remit to the conference of Chambers of' Commerce convened bv iho Wellington Central Chamber, and tfl draft a remit to the Counties Conference, embodying Ihe gist of the replies received from local bodies.
