NEW TECHNICAL COLLEGE

COMPETITIVE DESIGNS TO BE CALLED FOR. At last evening's meeting of the Technical Education Board a long discussion, took place in committee on the subject of pressing forward with the erection of the new Technical College on Mount Cook site. The chief point at issue, was whether an architect should bo employed to preparo complete, plans (from the ideas submitted by Mr. W. L. La Trobe) or competitive designs called for. There was a difference of opinion on the point, the outcome being a decision favouring the calling for competitive designs (based upon Mr. La Trobe's plans of the general lay-out of the buildings). Jt was decided that no time should lie lost in drawing up tho conditions of the competition, nnd that tho following prizes bo offered: First, .£l5O (to bo merged in tho commission should the work be gone on with); second, ,£75; third, ,£SO. Tho competition is to bo open to architects resident in New Zealand. It is estimated that the complete structure will cost about ,£70,(100.

As it is desired to test the usefulness of the new I.ectionnry .before it is irrevocably adopted by the Church, the Bishop of London has given leave, where the clergy and emigrations are willing, for it to he used uuriug tho presont year.
