CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKET
By Teloeraph—Press Association. , Christchurch, May 27. The bug dry spell has been broken by cold south-west rain, with snow on the ranges and on Banks Peninsula. The principal effect it is likely to have on the market will bo the' hardening of prices of oats and oalsheaf chaff. There are practically no oats offering by growers, although Algerians and good Dunn are in demand for seed, but they are difficult to procure. Growers do not like to part with thei" oats in. caso they should want them for their own use, and now that the weather has broken they will no doubt be still more reluctant to sell. The same remarks apply to oatsheaf chaff, and although the nominal price is »L's 15s. to i 6 per toil at country Stations there are very few sellers.. The partial removal.of the embargo on the shipment of potatoes to Australia has not affected the market to any extent, owing lo there being 110 shipping .available, and it is not known what the ruling' prices will be in the Sydney market when tlio shipping strike ends. Buyers have lately been giving toi'G ss. per ton at country stations, but they; are indifferent about operating at present. It is reported that some of the North Island .merchants aro trying to resell potatoes,' and if that is so it may tend to loosen the'iuarket. The nominal quotations for onions .is ,E7 10s. to .£8 per ton at country stations, but there is little 'msiness doing.
