THE MAORI SAILS
» MORE TEOUBLE WITH FIREMEN. The ferry steamers Maori mid Mararw both sailed last night for Lyttcltou, carrying about SCO passengers. Before tho Maori was finally dispatched the troublo that had arisen on Monday night between tho firemen and tho Union Company was made considerably woree 'by the eulranco into the disagreement, of the ship's engineers, so confusing the issue at slake'' that all chances of Ihe vessel sailing looked hopeless. Tho firsi phase of the trouble, that between the stokehold complement and the company, concerning the refusal of the men to take the Maori to sea at a. reduced speed, brightened very much yesterday, and it was considered certain that Uio vessel-would sail, although at a reduced speed. The fresh difficulty in tho way arose through the altitude of ft fireman on tho articles to the chief engineer. Tho outcome was that the other engineers held a meeting, and passed a resolution that they would not take the ship to sea unleßS another man was engaged to relievo the fireman in question Their demand could not, however, be met, owing to it being impossible to engage a substitute at tho time. After considerable discussion an amicable understanding was arrived at, leaving matters as thev etood, and the Maori Bailed for the south ot 10.25 p.m. The full crew was short by- ttoe*. Tho Maori will remain at Lytto'lton until to-morrow, when she will comi north in her regular run
