Major Hume is due to return to New Zealand on Sunday next by the Devon from Sydney. Since his return to TUgypt from furlough in New Zealand Major Hume has seen strenuous service. Of late he had been lecturing to the British' Force at Beyrout in connection with the vducation scheme that Had been inaugurated for soldiers-both at Homo and nbruad.

Mr. A. T. Bate, of Wellington, for many years a member of the Wellington Stock Exchange, lies seriously ill at Waikanao.'

Mr. G. F. Dixon, assistant-private secretary to the Minister of Defence, has been appointed to act as official reporter with the Governor-General while lie is visiting Samoa and the' Pacific Islands. Mr. Dixon left x yesterday to join the Tutanekai at Auckland.

Mr. E. Knowles Cameron has been appointed commercial instructor and teacher of vocational training' to soldiers at tho Wellington Technical School. Mr, John L. firifl'en is to take over the evening accountancy-classes hitherto conducted by Mr. Boiton (now ncting-diroc-l.nr).

Mr. and Mrs. James L. Hay return to-day by the Rimutaka. Mr. liny was tho pioneer New Zealand Y.M.C.A. secretary, leaving New Zealand with the Fourth Reinforcement by the Willochra in April, 1015. He organised theW.M.C.A. work in the Esbekia Gardens, Cairo, where he made a, host of 'friends. When tho New Zealand troops left' Egypt for France, Mr. Hay was "-ransferred to ll.e division, where he was organising secretary in charge of the whole of the New Zealand work wit'- the division in France until December kst, when he was transferred to London as supervising secretary. Mr. Hay's many, f-iends will bo delighted to hear of his "•eluru. Mrs. Hay will be better remembered by soldiers as Sister Gunn, of the Bvockonhurst Hospital. After n brief holiday, Air. Hay will assume control of tho Wellington branch ,of tho Y.M.C.A.

Mr. William Brown (of. Messrs. Lacry and Co.), who was about to leave on a trip to America' and England, has cancelled those arrangements for the present.

Mr. W. E. Caldow, secretary of the Wellington Choral Union, : s leaving on a business trip to England bv Iho'Remuora next month. During lxis absence, which will extend into next year, Mr. E. A. Tanner will perform the secretarial duties. ~ The honour of life membership of the Now Zealand Academy of Fine Arts has been granted to Mr. Noel Bar-mud. at present. in England (who was tho first secretary of the academy), and to Mr. A. T. Bate, for many years ft meiubor of tho council.

Lanco-Corporal R. E. Lucas, of Levin, who was a prisoner of war for several months, is returning by the* Hiinutaka to-day.

Mr. R. H. Ellis, managing director for Messrs. Ellis and Manton, of Wellington, is leaving on a trip to America and England by the next trip of the Niagara. Private Paul Coffey, son o c Mr. Paul Coffey, of Oriental Bay, who was wounded at Passchendnele, is returning to New Zealand by the Rimutaka.

Plight-Commander Rniney, who 6aw service in Gallipoli and tgypt, is visiting Wellington as third officer of tho Arawa.

Mr. Harold Court, third eon of Mr. John Court, Auckland, is in an English' hospital suffering with congestion 01 the lungs. He has been on Motive service (or three and a half years. He enlisted in Auckland, but being rejected by tho Medical Board he proceeded to England and offered his services +here, and ua6 accepted. The regiment to which he was attached was sent 16 Salonika,, and was ongnged in muoh strenuous fighting on that front until the-signing of the armistioe.

The death is reported from England of Captain Campbell Hepworth, C.8., R.N.R., R.D., who was a master mariner in the Union Company's South African mail line, and commodore of Milburn's Port line of steamers. In 1896, wheu Mr, James Huddart started the Cana-dian-Australian line, Captain Hepworth was appointed to the command of the 6teamer AVarrimoo, and 'ater he had charge of the Aorangi on the Pacific Line. Captain Hepworth gave most of his spare time to scientific subjects, lie was a keen observer of the currents; and published a, book on ocean currents and also one on meteorology. He was the author of "A Seaman's Handbook," which is used bv almost every British officer afloat. When war broke out he offered his services to the Admiralty, who retained him in Sis position as Marine Superintendent.

Surgeon-Captain S. J. Adams, N.Z.M.C., was among those who returned to New Zealand by the Panaroa on Saturday. Previous to leaving New /lealand lie was in practice at Poxton. but went to Scotland in September, 1914, and joined the Imperial Forces. After a -icviod on active service, ho was, in !91G, appointed surgeon and pathologist at Ripon Hospital, Yorkshire, and in 1917 was again sent to Prance, being appointed bacteriologist and pathologist at the 26th" General Hospital, Utaples. "While there the hospital was bombed by German aeroplanes, which did considerable damage. It was at Staples that Captain Adams was rather seriously wounded, and was sent to Manchester Hospital, where ho remained for a long period. As soon as lie was fit for duty again, tho Northern Command applied for him to go back to Rinon Hospital as surgeon and pathologist, and he remained there until the Now Zealand authorities recalled Mm to the No. 1 General Hospital at Brockenhurst. When the hospital closed down ho volunteered for transport duty, and was posted to the Paparoa.
