TRAMWAY EXTENSION
TO KELBURN, NORTHLAND AND TAITVILLE
WESTERN SUBURBS LEAGUE
, A; meeting of residents of Kelburn, Taitviile, and Northland was heid last evening in tho Presbyterian Church Schoolroom, and in spito of tho inclement weather there was a very large attendance'. Mr. T. Quay, one of the conveners of, the meeting, presided. Tho chairman said that it was clear from tho large'.attendance that tho demand for a hotter tram servico was urgent. Tho residents wero extremely anxious for a better servico' or an extension of the tram servico to suit tho Convenience 1 of tho residents of Tnitvilio, Kelburn North, and Northland. It was well known that beforo tho war tho City Council was favourable to tho wotlc being carried out _ as. early as possible. During tho war it was ijiiito impossible for the works to be carried out, because of tho shortage of men and money, and ,it:was.difficult to obtain machinery and plant. The war was now over, and the.' were all anxious to'eee tram extensions. WJion Mr. Luke was installed as Mayor the other day, he outlined works to be undertaken, and foremost of these was the tramway extension across Kelburn. . The epidemic hnd taught him. that the housing problem had to lie faced and (lie congested areas relieved. There was. no hope of. doing that without proper tram connections. It was the intention of the City .Council .to proceed with these works at the earliest possible moment. He referred to the cable cars which served, tho-people up to Upland Pond, and perhaps a- little further. Tho company, however, would have to improve its service; and. the City Council should see ■to tlint. But 1 heir concern that evening was the extension of the tram service to serve the Taitviile, Highbury, Kelburn Nortlrr and Northland districts. Seeing that the City Council wag seriously considering work of this character, it was for them to keep the council up to the mark. The districts named had been badly served during the last- ten yenps, and they should display a united front and form a league to bring before the City Council tho imperative necessity of' this tramway extension. The question of -.the route was a matter for the engineer and the City Council. There were several routes'suggested, tat the final objective of the tram extension shonld bo Wadestown. If this-were done they would have a picturesque line, the most picturesque in New Zealand, and it would open up land for homes for those living in the congested areas. Wilton's Brish would be made available to thousands of people. ' On the motion of Mr. A. Lambert, a Western Suburbs Tramway Extension League, embodying residents of Taitviile. Hiphbury. JOlbuni North, and Northland, was formed..
There, was a long discission, a few of the speakers being anxious to see n route decided' upon, but eventnull.T it ,wns realised that the Tonte was a matter fo l ' the city to deal with.,
• The--following, were\. appointed the league's committee Messrs. G. A. Troup, A. H: HoUis, B. Vnn Staveren, N. T. Gooder, .T. ."Burnett. T. Guay. P. H. Putnam, 1 A. E. Lambert, F. W. Manlon, A. Duncan, H., Kose, and W. I. Cl^rk. Mr. W. Skec? raised the question, of whether Knrori residents should not bo considered in connection with this matter. Fo stnted that Wore the war the council made A definite promise that they would give Knrori n>shorter roule. and Knrori was -now looking for that promise, to ho fulfilled;' He thought the ■ efforts of the league would he strengthened if they fixed, upon a route and shirk to that... ~ Mr. C. S. S. Kellv was appointed secretary to the league.
