PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
— * The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Bwan), Councillors C. P. Brocklebank, W. Cox, J. Churchouse, J. Kyle, W. Hay, A. Anderson, D. S. Bedingfield, G. Cook, and J. E. Tovev.
The Health Officer reported one caso qt diphtheria in tho borough.' Tho Minister of Internal Affairs wroto advising that Cabinet had decided thai pcace celebrations would take place on the second Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday after the receipt in tho Dominion of tho official announcement of tho signing of the 'preliminary peace. A circular from tho Gisborno Borough Council asking the support of tho council to a remit sent by it to the Munioipat Conference, urging that tho names on tho electoral roll should be transferred to tho borough roll, was received. It was decided to support the proposal. The Wellington Kugby Union wrote ro. gretting its inability to agree to tho League having tlib use of one of tlio Britannia Street turnstiles.—-Received.
A letter was received from tlio Minister of Mines intimating that tho development of the seven to nine-mile coal seam was receiving tlio consideration of the Government at tho present time. The Acting-Prime Minister wrote on the samo matter, and stated that steps would, l» taken to put in hand "tlio construction .of a necessary branch railway as onvlj as possible. The Minister of Internal Affaira wrolt> stating that it was proposed to introduce legislation dealing with tho question « permanent pence memorials, and ho would shortly issue a circular letter to local authorities informing tlieni of tho proposals of the Government in that direction. Meantime tiffc Government had already decided not to grant subsidy in the case of expenditure of inonoys upon permanent memorials. It was decided to support a request from tlu> Central Howling Club aslring tlio council to carry out the top-dressing of the bowling green. Tho sub-committee appointed to inquire into the feasibility of faking over tho Pctone band rotunda reported that it had made full inquiries, but could not recommend tlio council taking tlio proposed step. It was , decided to fall in with tho views of tlio sub-corn in ilteo and to take no action in the matter.
it'was resolved, on the motion of Councillor Anderson, seconded by Councillor Chiirohouse, that a return 'bo prepariO iind circulated to members of the council prior to tho consideration of the estimates showing the whole of flic council'# employees,' tho hours worked, and tlio wages or salaries received.
