Dr. H. W. Cloary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auokland. who has been in a privato hospital for the last six weeks, was reported to be considerably improved in health at the end of last week.
Sir Franois Bell, Attdrnoy-General, has been reappointed to tho Legislative Council. Sir franois Bell's term of'appointment will not expire until July 10 next, and in the ordinary course of things he would no\: have been reappointed until that date, but tho. Governor-General is going to Samoa, and as he may not return before that data Sir Franois 801 l has resigned and been reappointed.
Mr. E. E. Gillon has been appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer, in succession to Mr. H. H. 'Jackson, who reoently retired from the Railway Service.
The Rev. 11. C. George, who has been in cluirgo of tho Congregational Church in Devonport for two or three years, is resigning his position, and leaving almost immediately. Mr. George's good work among the Rarotongan and other island soldiers, who were trained at Narrow Neok Camp was fully recognised by tho people of tho borough.
Mr. D. W. Jack, 0.8. E., ax-Mtiyor of Whangarei, arrived from the north by yesterday's express.
Charles Hawson, who has beeiv accountant for the Wellington branch of Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co,, Ltd., for the past 17 years, has been appointed secretary to tho firm.

Mr. Tkomns Graham, who died at Dunedin a few days ago, was one of the original enginedrivers on the DunedinPort Chalmers railway. He was bora at West Caldcr, Scotland, and arrived in Dunedin by the ship William Davia on August 7, 1872. Mr. Graham rotired from the Railway Service on superannuation about twelvo years ago.
A Prosa Association telegram from Whakatano states:—Mr. G. A. Brabant, of Whakatane, has been notified that his father, Judge 11. W. Brabant, died at Napier on Sunday, aged about S5. Tho deceased was well known in the Bay of Plenty. Ho was tho first S.M. at Opotiki, and later, in turn, S.M. for Tauranga and Kotoma, Wanganui, and Auckland, and finally Napier, where ho rotired into privato life. As a Judgo of the Nativo tods Court ho did much good work in settling the Maori question. Mrs. Brabant predeceased him at Napier by several years. Ho leaves tho following family:—Messrs. W. H. Brabant, Bank of Now Zealand, at Napier; It. A. Brabnnt, agent, for tho Northern Co., Whakatane; Frederick Brabant, Bank of Australia, Fcathci'stou; Thos, Brabant, farmer, Napier; Eruest Brabant, farmer, Hawke's Bay; Charles Brabant, Bank of New South Wales; Geoffrey Brabant, Bank of Australasia; Miss E. Brabant, Napier; Mrs. G. Rich, ardson, Christchurch, and Mrs. Tyres, Christchuroh.
