WANGANUI RACES
POLTHOGUE AND EURIPOS AGAIN SUCCESSFUL.- ■ ......
(Prom Our Special Correspondent.) Ine Wanganui Meeting was concluded in spring-like • weather end before, a record orowd. The racing was very clean, and in this respect ii' was an improvement on tho opening day. /The machine handled ,£4,1,107 as against jeS7,IW on tho second day last year. The total for tho meeting was .£83.936, an ' increase of X 11.599. on last year's total.' For the opening oyent the public went solidly, for the top weight Silver Link, who was at a very short prico compared with some of tho others. Demos was second choice. Inah and Carmol Arch led the two favourites into the straight, where Rawakoro slipped up on the fence and soon put the issue, in safe keeping. She won by two lengths from the favourite, who was a neok dear of Movement Camel Arch and Demos' were the next to finish. .....-.' . /.- ■'.
The ivinnor's form was a great improve■Eent on that shown by her on the opening day. ..The favourite fan a solid race, but the weight told at the finish. Demos also found 9st. a burden over tie last furlonff. •■'_,•■ .. • .
. Arrowfield and Catfot were the serateliings for tho Balgownio Hack Handicap and. Bayborry and.'Cello wero preferred in that order. Tho last-named mado play going out of tho straight, and led Pomeroy and Signorolla to the home turn, where Marshal Neil joined him, and in the run to the post he -won comfortably by a length;' -Ben Bolt, was the same distance away; , and Signorella finished next. The winner only wants placing to: score again; ' .. ( All _ tho \ acceptors but Foeman. who is sore, , were saddled up' for the Grandstand Steeplechase. Master Strowan was.an odds-on choice with' Coalition,. Bore, Polthogue, and : Gaekwar backed. in that order. At the start Grafton Tot mado play from- Polthogue, Bore, and a field. Polthogue took charge at. the .'seven furlongs, and, going down the back, he set a'very fast pace from Bore and Arlington." At the logs Coalition fell, and tho stand'double brought down . Grafton Tot. With a mile to go, Polthogue had ton. lengths', advantage of Bore and Arlington, who wera the same distance: in front. of' Master Strowan. Down tho back the three lastnamed wero being hard ridden. Arlington shook :Bpro off round the .bottom bond, but Po'lthogue was still well clear. The favourite caught Bore before the honooop, which brought down Arlington. Polthogue ran in an easy winner from the favourite,. with : Bore ten lengths away. Merry Jack and Gaekwar were the only. othors : to .finish. None of the riders were injured. The winner is a very nseful horse; and out of 'four starts over steeplechase ..course's ho has won thrice and- been 6econd once. He looks like-adding-still further to his score at Ellerslio, and wero be in the Great Northern Steoples with' about lOst. he would bo the ante-post favourite.' . ■ •"•: There was some heavy wagering in the Hack Hurdles. Omahu was favourito, but there was big money for Gang Awa', Lochella,' Bernice, and-Rio. Gang Awa' made play for six furlongs, where Bernico and Rio went to the front, but down-the back 'Bernice lost her position, and Rio led the favourito. At the second fence from home he. was.woll clear, and Bernjco came down .here.' Entering the straight Omahu and Lochella closed on the leader,, but he led'over the last fence (where Lochella lost his rider), and won nicely, from Omahu. Gunwale got third plaoe, and then, came Sturdee and Gang Awa'. Bernice broke his leg' and had to be destroyed. Rio was a poor performer on.the flat, but he'looks like turning out useful-at .the.hurdle business. H. King has him very well.just now, and he was.' capably, handled by AV. Ayres, who is just back from tho front.- Rio is. a half-brother to that good performer Mahuta, who also carried Mr.-'H. M'Man'away's colours. There, wero only fivo- acceptors in' the bigr race, .but tho first four of .tlieui; were all'well backttl. v'-Euripos. was ' .&■ better favourite than Zola:.' vAVhiro set the pace for a mile, when the favourite ran to the front, aiid soon disposed of the opposition. , Zola challenged him. two furlongs from l home,'-but coiild make : nq impression on the top weight, who' won conifortably.'; -Yankee-. Jack' Was a'poor third,. and, tho. other*', pair were -beaten off. • The winner was allowed to pay a 'false price.;.. He was ridden by H. M'Sweeney, «s>his usual, pilot F. Ellis was badly shaken after his fall off .Bernice. Enripos Eeemed to bo a better horso for his race in the Century-Hurdles. He is turning out a. great bargain .for Mr. H. A. Knight, who '.bought him'for a mere song from F. D. Jones. . ■ .
• Backers were astray iii the Empire Handicap,-when an outsider in Hushman won from Volo and several better-backed oandidates. Tho winner and- Trombone led lor three furlongs, when , Bisihgham put a break on the field. Entering tho straight /he compounded, and-Hushman again took charge. He had to be ridden right out to keep off Volo, who got a lucky riin on the. fence over the last throe furlpngs. Arrowfield was prominent tho whole way," and finished third just clear of Kowi Poto and Rieingham. The winner was not produced in the Connolly Handicap, but.he ran a good race at Hawerathe week previous, Ha also competed in a hack hurdle race at
Bulls,'but'his jumping on that occasion was faulty. A very successful mooting was , concluded with the Farewell Uncle Pint, i'or which tliero wero eight runners, Primato being scratched. There was fl* record pool on tho machine, over £8300 being ,inv<?pted, and so evenly were-the starters backed tHat . five of them carried over ■£1000. (inch. Astinomo was the actual favourite', and after the field had gono a furlung she took charge and led tho rest of the way. . Muddy and.Pout Haste were prominent to the straight entrance, where Soa Sprite, who began slowly, got an opening on the rails, nnd in the run to the p.ost ehe boat Buddy for second placo. Post Haste and Endure were tho next to finish.
