SATURDAY'S SPORTS

THE RUGBY MATCHES

PONEKE DEFEAT SELYWN

Palrons of the Athletic Park on Saturday were not treated to any wonderful displays of football. I'oncke met Selywn on No. 1 ground, and romped home to victory by "3 points to 3. On No. 2 ground, Oriental defeated Wellington by the narrow margin of two points. There was a fairly uumerous attendance of tho public, interest being centred mainly on the Poneke-Selwyn match.

PONEKE (26) V. SELWYN (3). Poneke forced the pace right from" the jump, and the Green and Blacks wero soon on the defence. Poncko were awardcd~a free-kick, which was taken by Clirietophorson, who failed, despite the fact that the attempt appeared to be an easy one. Selwyn oponed a spirited attack, and play was removed to half-way, until the Red and Blacks surged down again, the dangerous situation being relieved by Peart, who centred nicelv. Uninteresting piny ensued until tho Green and Blacks got the upper hand, and for n long time they kept Poncko busy defending. The Poneke backs were too nipny, however, and eventually thev broke clean away. Play was carried right dnwn to the Solwyn line, and a try appeared to be inevitable, but Christoplie.wn kicked the trifle too hard, and it went dead. Nothing of a specially interesting nature occurred after this until M'Artlinr. the Poneke wing three-quarter, who was playing a good game, made a great effort to net over. Hp cleared all opposition until he was just within striking distance when Wogan. the Green and Black winger, pounced on him and brought him down, ft was a great tackle, and Wocnn was loudlv applauded. If anything. Sehvyn had the advantage in th« closing stages of the epcll, and they hud the honour of drawing first Wood. While ft struggle for supremacy was in' progress in midfield Peart suddenly dashed in. picked up from the ruck, and bolted away down-field.
