DAIRY FACTORIES AND THE COAL SUPPLY

MORE ABOUT PUPONGA SCHEME.

(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) New Plymouth, May 24.

In connection with the statement that has been published from Palmereton North to tho effect that the Taranaki daily factories had acquired an interest in tlio Puponga coal mines and had arranged to take 200,000 tons of coal annually, thus , assuring a supply for the dairying industry, a Press representative inter, viewed Mr. W. D. Powiirell, chairman ot directors of the Kaupokonui Dairy Company. He stated that us far as ho knew nono of tho Tai'unaki dairy factories hart acquired such an interest. A proposition had been put to him to secure an interest in another mine in that locality on behalf of tho Knupokonui Dairy Company and tho Patea Farmers' Meat Freezing Company, of which he was also chairman. Recognising tho importance of having an assured supply of coal he hud realised tho advantages such a proposition, would hovo, particularly as his Patea company had the boats available to carrj tho coul. In fact, now they went to Puponga for coal. He had mentioned tlu> matter to the chairmen o£ two or three other largo Taranaki dairy factories, bin bo far nothing had been done in the matter. Ho had not yet been able to visit tho site, and certainly would do nothing until ho had viewed the site, ascertained tlio coal available, the depth of water, etc. The fact that the matter \vu» first mentioned to him wheu ou a visit to Palmeraton North might possibly have been responsible for tho emanation of tlio report. Mr. Powdrell considered that it would certainly pay the Taranaki dairy factories to consider the mailer, as the importance of having an assured supply of coal could not be ovor-cstiniiited, particularly in view of the fact that the establishment of the dried milk and sugar of milk industries would necessitate the use of laTge quautities of co:il. Factories, too, that wero now using woud would soon bo compelled to uso coal also, as tlio supply of wood was diminishing fast. In tho slack season tho Patea bouts could run supplies of coal to Patea l'or the South Taranaki factories, and possibly to New Plymouth for North Taranaki. "
