guard charged with man. slaughter; Melbourne, May 24.. Corporal W. Poultsoii has been committed for trial for the' manslaughter of Private ft Jenmiott on April'2B.—Press Assn. [According to an official report, nine prisoners, under an escort of a sergeant, ii corporal, and ten men of other ranks, all returned soldiers, left Melbourne eu routo for Albany. When about half an hour's journey from Seymour, there was a disturbance in one of the carriages, anil one of the prisoners attacked tha sentry, and tried to choke him. Tho men struggled into the corridor, and three other prisoners came out of tho compartment, and had tho sontry down and were punching him. Corporal Poultson pulled the'sentry away, and tho prisoners wore ultimately forced back into the compartment. They quietened down for a while, but later again endeavoured to break the. guard. One of tho escort seized his ride, held it at tho ready, and told tho prisoners to stand back or he would lire, l'rivato jemmetl, one of the prisoners, rushed the eoutry, mid cndoavoured to got the rifle. Corporal Poulteon then iired, and Jeramott dropped down on the seat. The train waa stopped, but Jemmett wag dead. On arrival at Seymour another attempt was made lo overpower the guard.
