TOLL FOR THE BRAVE BELLRINGERS

A national memorial service for church bellringors who have fallen in tho war was held at St. Clement Danes, Strand, a church whose bolls of '"Oranges and Lemons" fame are considered by ringers to be the finest of their rango in London. The service was attended by delegates from ringers' associations all over the country. It had for its most impressive moment the ringing of tho "Wholo-Pull-nnd-Stand," which in campanology is the ringers' last tribute to. tho dead. Tho Rev. Charles D. P. Davies. lion, secretary of the Central Council of Church'Belli'ingers, had previously read a roll of honour of ringers in London and the district, which included SO names. Then a prayer for fallen ringers had been recited. While the congregation still knelt, the "tenor" bell was tolled a whole pull, ono noto open, ono note muffled. A solemn pause was followed by the ten bells ringing in succession, first with liquid clearness, and then 'muffled. ' The peal was indicative of a year of life, and either during or after the service was runs 30 times, a number selected as tho average age of the ringers who were commemorated. Similar services wore held at tho snnift hour in many cathedrals and in town and village churches throughout the cou& try. , .
