SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY

Captain F. ■W. Haybittle, who was tho lecturcr at the Sailors' Frieiul Society on Thursday, met with ft very warm welcome on rising to give his experiences on the' Western front for four and a halt' years. The lecturer held his audience for nearly two hours, being frequently interrupted by applause. The lecturer gave a special meed of praise to the nurses and women workers, who stood to their posts-when hospitals wore bombed by 10 Hun airships. He told of our men having only three machine guns in the early days of the war to 33 lield by the Germans, and in doing, so could only wonder. and - wonder that we held the enemy from the Channel ports. The chairman, Mr. Moore, missioner. has induced the lecturer to promise to speak to tho men again on Thursday next. An attractive programme of music was rendered at intervals, when the soloists were Mr. Montague- Gilm-mr and Miss Wes-. ton. Mesdame.s Walker. Williams, and Gilmour were most efficient pianista. Items were also given 011 Mr. Johns's gramophone. Mr. U. C. Rennet (hon. secretary) and Captain Hooper, R.N.R., moved and seconded ft vote of thanks, which was carried- with warmth. The lecturer auctioned the Institute jug to pay expenses of a new porch and the recovering of a billiard table for tho men's use. It brought in JS4.
