PRISONERS SENTENCED

, TWO HABITUAL CRIMINALS. His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) presided at tho Supreme Court yesterday morning, and passed sentence on several prisoners convicted during the past week. A coloured man named James Arthur Pollard, alias" Archio Tnvlor, who was convietcd of breaking and entering the premises of Oscar Hull-Drown at No. 137 Vivian Street, and stealing therefrom certain musical instruments, valued at .£l2s'. was the first to appear in the dock.

ITis Honour said there wore five previous convictions against the accused for theft and false pretences. With the. obicct of allowing. tho Prisons Board an opportunity, of dealing with the ease the prisoner was sentenced _ to eighteen months' imprisonment with hard labour. and declared n habitual criminal.

A FIGHT AND A KNIFE. •.! Percy Cashman, .who was found guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm, was the next to bo sentenced. Mr. P. W. : Jackson, who appearedfor the prisoner, pointed out that the jury had recommended Cashman to mercy, and he stressed -the fact that the prisoner had served at the. front, and suffered ill health, and also that he had a. wife} and young children. He urged that the prisoner's punishment should be such ,as not to necessitate his confinement. in prison. llis Honour said he could not agree to that suggestion. He had laid it down for several years that he would not allow any person to attack any other person with a knife. Ho said that a. year ago, and he would keep his word. On account of the ill-health of the prisoner, His Honour imposed a sentenco of nine months' imprisonment. _ Addressing the prisoner, His Honour said: "If you fall ill I will recommend that you be sent to Kaincaroa. There yon will be kept in the open air, and there you will live in a garden." AN OLD OFFENDEIt.. Mr.'P. W. Jackson represented William Albert Hurray, who was found guilty of the'theft of a kit of tools. Ilis Honour remarked that tho.prisoner:had twenty-six previous convictions against him. and he would lie sentenced (o six months' imprisonment with hard labour, aiid would be declared a habitual criminal. •SEXIIAL CHIMES.. Mr. H. F. O'Leary pleaded for consideration for a young man named Henry Arthur Grant, who had been found guilty of indecent assault on a little, girl.
