NOTES FROM VARIOUS CENTRES MANAWATfI At a meeting of the Education Board this week, Jlcssrs. L. K. Bryant nnd P. C. Freeth wero deputed to go into the question of -school accommodation at Palmerston iNorth, and to report to the board. The request by the College Street School Committee, of Palmerston North, for a section to be purchased for an infants' school was favourably recommended to the Department of Education on certain terms. Mr. .Bryant wa« appointed to report on tho boundaries of the Campbell Street School district, with a view to ascertaining if Messrs. Gallichan and Clarke are entitled to lie members of the committee. A tender at. .£359 was accepted for building latrines at College Street School. At tho Glen Oroua School .£IOO has been raised for a war memorial. The Education. .Board lias given permission for its erection on the school grounds, but have not the power to dedicate the site, in view of any further change of the school's looale. Mr. W. S. Gawith, of Fitzherbert, had the misfortune to break his leg this week. While attempting to get into. Lis milk cart he missed his footing, with the result that ho fell to Mie ground and the wheel of the vehicle passed over his leg, breaking it jus-t above tho knee. After lying on the roadside for some time he was discovered and carried into his residence, and subsequently removed to tile Palmers ton North Hospital. The driverloss horse ami cart was arrested on; its journey to the factory after proceeding about half a mile own tho road, and two small children who were aboard the cart when the accident occurred were res* cued from their, somewhat dangerous position.
At a meeting of the bachelors of Fitzherbcrt district it was decidcd to hold a bachelors' ball on Juno 11. Messrs. V. Kyle and W. Scott were appointed joint secretaries, and a strong committee was set up to enrry our arrangements. The Fitzherbert ratepayers held another meeting recently in connection with the agitation .to erect a bridge at Hokowlntu. Mr. l'\ T. Danvers was in tho chair, and reports were received indicating that {he proposal was being very favourably recoived by tho local bodies interested.
■ Over 300 settlers gathered in the Tokomaru Hall this week on the occasion of a welcome home social to returned soldiers of? the Tokomaru district. The chair was taken by Mr. It. Stewart, and a lengthy programme was gone through. During tho evening Mesdames J. li, Whyte and J. R. Moody performed Hid ceremony ofi pinning medals on the following returned men:—Messrs. I{. Berquist, 11.. Barber, S. W. Barber, E L HV Lig S' lls ' J - 1L A. K. M Doiigall, and T. D. Stokes. Mr. M'Dougall responded on behalf <ji' bis cbmrndes. Ilio Maiiawatu Golf Club has arranged to send a teain to play a match with tlio Otaki Golf Club on May 31. Hatches have also Ijocii arranged with the Wangaurn Club at Palmorston on .Tune 14,- nnd tlio return on July 12 at Wanganui. There are a large number of entries for tlio M'Lennan Clip this season, and play will shortly commence in connection with this competition.
The disputed .election of the Foxton School Committee was' reviewed by tlio Wanganui Education Board nt its meet, ing this week, when 85 Foxton lesidpnts petitioned that tlio election bo nullified on account of alloyed irregularities. The board also had a counter petition signed by 110 Foxton residents, claiming that tlio proceedings were regular in every respect. After a stormy session with the spokesman for the first lot of petitioners tho board minniinously passed the following resolutionj"Th.it in view of the evidence presented by, the deputation of Mr. J. K. .llornblow, it is plain that the, election of the School Committee could not have been materially affected by the way the election was conducted, nnd this board cannot see its way to grant; tho new elootion naked for."
Through the boiling over of a pot of beeswax mid turpentine 011 n gns> ring, the Palmerston North Fire Brigade was called lipon on Thursday night to extinguish an outbreak of lire at the residence of Nurse Humphries, in Ferguson Street. The outbreak was confined to me room, which was considerably damaged. In celebration of their winning the Barraud Cup four seasons in succession, the members of the Palmerston North Railway Cricket Club held a smoko concert on Thursday njght. Mr. ,T. B. ■ Proud was ill the chair. The presentation of the cup, which was competed for under the auspices of the Manawatu Cricket Association was mado by the vice-president, Sir. Lo Grange, who conjrratulated the club on its success. The club captain, Mr. Greer, replied- on behalf of the club. musical and vocal, items were contributed by Messrs. Delahnnty, Bennett, Pieard, Spencer, J. Hanley, and Houston.
In view of kor approaching marriage to Mr. C. Brown, ot' llakino, and formerly of Poliangina, Mi.w Ivdith. Croft, who bus been postmistress at. Poliangina for some, time past, was tendered a kitchen tea by the Poliangina settlers, this week. Presentations were made by Mr. Passey on behalf of the large number of gettlers present. It is the intention of Pohangina settlers to arrange a monster ■.welcome to tbe returned boys, not only of Pohangina, but all tbe districts from Ashhurst to Apiti.
WOODVILLE The Minister of Lands intends to' usit Woodville next week. Residents of Woodlands Road arc organising a • presentation to the. child of the late Private J. Maisey, killed in action, and arc holding a concert next week for this purpose. Over ,£250 w«3 realised at Woodville as tho result of the Presebyterian Church bazaar. ' 0 Miss M. M'Farlane has been appointed sole teacher at Hopelands. Mangfttainoka aiid Woodville 'Football Clubs will play a match at Woodville on June 3, the receipts to go to the fallen, footballers' memorial fund. The Woodville Club is also sending a team to compete in the seven-a-sido tourney at Dannevirke.. WAIAMPA Arrangements have lieen made for tho Industries Commission, which sits at Masterton on Mondhy, to take evidence on tlie questions of the liimulaka deviation, hydro-electric power, woollen mills, and, other industries, the railway surtax on imported timber, etc., and tiio housing problem. The levies to be made on ihe local bodies of the Wairarapa by the Wairarapu Hospital'and Charitable Aid Board this year are estimated at .£15,430, compared with ,£10,823 last year. The death is announced of Mr. D. O'Hara, who was for a number of years employed on the staff of tho Masterton Borough. Council.
