WANGANUI MEETING
, BIG STEEPLECHASE WON BY COALITION. ■ / ly Tclegraph.-Special Correspondent, i '■'.'.■■ Wanganui, May 22. i Tho Wangahui meeting opened in glorious weather and before a larga crowd. After, tho first raco tlie chief stipendiary steward- had a long talk to 11. liny, rider of Silver Link, but''no inquiry was held. The Judicial Committer jml after tho Steeplechase, and P. Flyriuj jiidyr of Foeman, was fined ,£lO for careless, riding, which resulted in Master ' Stfowan. getting, a bad passage. No other performances weie inquired into during tho day.' ' • The toraliastor handled 39,829, against. 'X 35,143 on the corresponding''day last year., Tirana and Hyginas were withdrawn (from the Borough Handicap, .and Demos, "who drew tho rails, was made a hot ■ favourite. Ho began 'smartly, ami with Silver Link, Birkenvale, and Inah in at-, tendance.he led into the straight. ..The '•.field then.closed np, but Demos held liis own and.won comfortably.from Caramel Arch, who got 'upon the ferico at,tho •distance, nndlioyal Chef, who also finished well. Movement, Volo,' and ' SilverLink were the next .to .finish.. .Inah 'stopped badly, and so did Birkerivalo... Polthoguo, Grafton Tot, and Master '"Webster was .'the order of .favouritism in tho Hack .Steeplechase. All six acceptors went to,the post. Tornea made, play for six furlongs, when Grafton lot gjt. up to him, but when the last milo was entered upoii the favourite and. Mas- ' tor' Webster went to tho front,, and tho top-weight, jumping well, always had the lissuo in safe keeping.' Ho won nicely, by n couple of lengths with Grafton Tot 6ix lengths away. Then came; Hoatu, Tornea, and Torchy." '.. " ',',."'.'. '. Gaekwar was. missing from the big Stctpleohas'e field, but the others were all paraded and attracted a lot of attention. Master Strowan, Coalition, and Foeman all stripped well. Tho two top-weights wore tho favourites, with Bore and -lel;low and Black also well fancied. At the etart Arlington and Foeman led a buuchcl field, with the top-weight, in the rear. The positions were. '-unchanged . for , the iirst' two iniies, and the field.kept well together. Going out'of the. straight the last timo Coalition and Bore made a forward move. Down' tho' • back.: Coalition joined the leader, and at tho half:milo lie looked a 'certain-'winner. Then tno top-weight put"in a run,.and was only a.length away at the last fence,. but the /weight told, and in the run home Coali'tion held a threo lengths' advantage. • Boro was four -lerigths away, and then cmno Arlington'and Foeman. The'winner gave if good even, exhibition throughout, but the top-weight fenced badly at times and lost a lot of ground... Bore ran a good race, but is not tho class of tho other pair. Foeman; :did . well for two miles, but ho is,not a stayer. Of the horses that competed l to-day, Bore is tho oniy one going on.to Auckland. Yellow and Black, (who was hopelessly gone in the wind) fell at the last fence, and'had to bo; destroyed; His rider was,, badly shaken'. ...... The absence of. the ttwo top-weights weakened tho Hack Hurdles field considerably.. Omahii and Lochella. monopolised the machine betting, and . {he former finished . up a,good: favourite. Mode made i play for six. furlongs, .when tho two favourites went to thofroht. At tho half-mile Lochella made a'.-faulty jump, and lost his.' position.'. Gunwalo challenged Omahu . before the\ straight was entered, but the favourite held his own and won comfortably from. Gunwale, while Bernico finished well in third place and Lochella w'as.next. ...■■'■. : All started in .the Century Hurdles, and there was a good duel for favouritism between Paraoa and Yankee' Jack, both of •whom looked well. At the start Whiro and Munster led at .'a. clipping paeo. At tho first fence Otter lost .his rider, .and Seadown and Paraoa were interfered with. Munster-went out by himself down the back, with Whiro, Yankee Jack, and Euripos following in that order. Passing the stand Minister was done with,'and "Whiro led.from Euripos and Seadown. This pair were in the lead at the sixfurlongs, "and clewed out from- the.field. Euripos always liad a bit the best, of .it,, and won bv a couple of lengths from Seadown, while Paraoa finished on in ■third' place. Yankee Jack was fourth, and then came Minister. Whiro fell at the last fence. Lambess, rider of Otter,
broke his arm. The winner jumped a M better to-day, i.aml if he maintains, his improvement lib .is sure to win a.i.ace at tho northern meeting.- Paraoa. may also do better, (is it is reckoned. the raco will improve him. Whiro and Minister were outclassed. The Connolly Handicap was a good betting race. All tbe acceptors went to th* post, and .there- was heavy support for Iteivi Poto,- Marqueteiir, Risihgham, and Client. Tressida and Trombone led a
bunched field for six furlongs, when. Ma r(iiietciir ran to the front and led -into the straight: Then Client and Rewi Poto put in [claims', but the. leader held hie own and won by a neck from Client, who Tan a good race. Rowi Poto wis several lengths away, and then came Risingham. The last-named got a bad run and was nearly down once. He will do better next time out. ' >, Cadet, Astinoine, and gapping were all well backed-for the concluding event.
The last-named was very sore in the preliminary, and was tailed off all the way in the race. Astinome set off in front, mid, followed by Bayberry'. the pair led
the whole wax. Astinbine won by a'couplo of lengths, with Cadet,a neck away.-Ben Bolt was'fourth.-....
