Dr. Simons, , the most interesting part of whose testimony was .that most of the Bolshevist leaders were , apostate Jews from the east side of New-York-and from Chicago. -At Nijni Novgorod Mr.. Ralph H. Dennis, of the American Consular service, testified, a cominissairß said tlior. "one of the most ruthlessly cruol of.-all tho officials" ho lind met was a. cobbler from New York. The city. was. ..full., of people who had come there after long nojourn in America. One of these apostate Jews told him that 'within the. next ten years they hoped to give Ainerifa. the same kind of Government that Russia, now had.. . ■
Mx. Ralph- Leonard, another member of the Consular service, related/how a commissairo-. in another eitj' which was threatened by Cossack invasion informed him ..Hint if tho. came he would claim American citizenship and show Ms new York Public Library card, claiming that it was an American passport. This coiiiinissaire, when he took office, seized 'all tho silk stockings in the cily, and gave each peasant -woman a pair. The witnesses stated that the Bolshevist forces were largely oftjcered'by Germans. Dennis was asked if any work was being done in Russia. He replied:
"In the ten months J was (here under Bolshevist rulo I visited many Kiont cities. I never saw- during the whole-of that time- asinglc carpenter,or mason at work. There is absolutely nothing in the way of construction going, on. Kvory'tiling is going to ruin everywhere, but fanning titill continues." ■:■•■■
