RESEARCH WORK
In connection with tho establishment of new degrees, it is staled that tho University of London will eventually agree to instituto a Ph.D. degree; and thus fall into line with tho tendency of other uuiversities. This is specially important now whoa there is a prospect of American studonts coming to England for resciU'i-'h who formerly went to (jermany. Some euch dogreo as a Ph.D. is apparently regarded by many of them as a necessary nfimulus to research, and it would he a pity it tho unequalled resources of London for many brunches of advanced sliidy were not fully used by foreign students. The scheme which is suggested would mnko the Ph.D. n kind of superior iI.A. The objection which is I'd I is (hat this mp'hl lower tho standiii',' of tho Master's tlcree which has always been jealously majntnined, but this danger would bo obviated if the I'h.lJ. weru given only for really distinguished research work. There might be a (lillicuKy in the Theological Fncully in working this reheine, »im;o it. lias no Master's degree. Hut why should there not bo a Master's decree in Theology, to be called perhaps M.'J'h.?— "The Guardian."
