A meeting of dog fanciers was held at Pnlmcrston North on Tuesday night, to consider the question of holding a show, and also the advisability of breaking away from the A. and I'. Association. Mr. W. I'. Durward presided. The chairman suggested that they should reconstitute the Kennel Club, which had been del'unct tor about two years. There were two reasons why they should not sever connection with the A. and I'. Association—(l) That it, would be impossible to carry on financially or succesfully by themselves; and (2) that the association was slil! registered in affiliation with the New Zealand Kennel Club. In the course, of a discussion it was pointed out that the present arrangement cost the club nothing, and the club arranged its own schedule. It was accordingly decideil to adhere to the present arrangements with Ihp association, and to reconstitute the Kennel Club on its old lines. Officers -were elected as follow:—President, Mr. Hugh Alters; vice-presidents, Mrs. Tfaggitt and Mr. l)unvard; .secretary, Mr. W. T. Penny; committee, Messrs. C. Aitchison, .r. M'Avinue. P. Prentice. Watson was elected a life-member in recognition of his valuable 'services in the past. Ihe question of centralising nil the municipal offices under one roof was discussed by. the Palmerston North Borough Council at its meeting on Tuesday night, when Councillor E. L. Broad moved that tho council consider tho question of acquiring a sito suitable' for the housing of the whole of tho council's offices, niifl that the Finance Committee be asked to bring <lown a report, on the matter. Mr. Broad pointed out that tho borough offices were at present scattered in different parts of the town, which fact did not make for efficiency or economy. The position was fast becoming acute. As time passed they would' have to have tramway offices, and there was also a suggestion of erecting a museum. The present library was a disgrace to Palmerston North. The motion was seconded by Councillor Spooner, who said that it was imperative that the council should tackle the problem.. After further dis cussion the motion was carried unanimously. ,
At the meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council this week the Manawatu Croquet and Bowling Club wrote, drawing attention to the fact that the pavilion on the municipal bowling green was totallv inadequate for the present re quireinents. . The club also intimated that it was prepared it its own expenso .to lay out tho adjoining acre for croquet and tenuis, and asked to be informed of the amount of rental to bu- charged for tho upkeep of this extra area. Tho Mayor- mentioned that, tile club had made a great success of the use of the grounds, and the lady members had offered to double' their subscriptions to tho club in the coining year to enable tho work to bo carried out. As chairman of the Reserves Committee Councillor Crabb emphasised that the council would have to exercise a policy of caution in regard to expenditure on reserves during the current year, dither parts of tho town were ' also entitled to consideration. The matter was referred to the Reserves Comniitteo to report en as soon as possible.
, 'J ho bogey competition which was played this week at Palmerston tinder tho auspices of the Ladies' Club resulted as follows:—A Grade: Miss Watson, 15, 2 down; Mrs. A. Seit'crt, 10. 3 down; Mrs. L. Seit'ert, M, G down. B Grade: Miss Coliinson, 23, G down; Miss B. Abraham. 25, 8 down ; Mrs. P ■ Sim, IG, 11 down. Juniors: Miss Gladys Seifert, 7, 2 up; Miss H. liett, 19, 2 up; Miss B. Luughnan, scratch, all square.
Several matters of interest' were discussed at the Palmertson North Borough Council meeting this week. 'I he District Health Officer wr.itc in reference to the maimer in which pigs were handled by tho Railway Department, stating that the matter was alreadv under consideration. and it was liope'd at an early date to have regulations which would give the necessary authority to ensuro that all virecautions were taken with food consigned' by rail. Som.o discussion took place relative to the coal shortage, when n resolution was received from the Runanga Borough Council suggesting : that the Government be urged to proceed with tlw development of the Sever, to NineMilo coal warn. Councillor Crabb and others emphasised the serious inconvenience that the coal famine was causing in Palmerslou North, and a resolution was adopted urging the Government to use every means within their power to develop the coal resources of the Dominion.
A four-roomed, unoccupied cottage, owned bv Mr. G. Malmo, was destroyed bv five at Bunnythorpo this week.
At the ordinary meeting of tho Shannon. Borough Council the Lighting Committee reported that they had considered the question of lighting, and had tried an experiment with the borough lamps. Some of the laui])s were badly situated, and required moving to more suitable placcs.' The report was adopted. and tho committee's recommendation to have the town lighted by caflbide was carried. The estimates for the turrent year, which were approved of, provide for a revenue of ,£1239 55., and an expenditure of .£1231!. It was decided to strike a rate of ■ lid. in the on tho 'capital value, producing ,£729 125., also a levy of lid. per week in the shape of a sanitary charge on all houses and buildings in the borough.
Bowling enthusiasts still continue to play at l'almerston Noith, despite the lateness of the season.. In a match played on the Palmerston North Club's gieens a team from Terrace End endeavoured to wrest the "Wishart Feathers from 1 the homo club, but were unsuccessful. I'\ Smith skipped the winning rink. The semi-final of the Palmerston North Club's handicap pairs was also played betwen L. Jackson and P. Needham (s.). and A. Wiinsett (sub.), and N. H. Nash (s.). the game being won by the latter. The two pairs left in the final are; Stacey and J. A. Nash (s.), and Nicholls and N. H. Nash (s.). The senior Wednesday hockey competition in the Palmerston North district will be commenced on Wednesday, May 28.
As in previous years, the Palmerston North branch of the W.C.T.TJ. intend running physical culture classes throughout the winter, ami they have procured the use of the High School hall for the purpose.
