NORMAL SCHOOL

SECONDARY DEPARTMENT DISESTABLISHED. At yesterday's race tins', of the Wellington Education Board tho following communication was received from llr. J. Caughley, Assistant-Director of Education '."In reply to your memorandum of the Bth ult., I have to state that, with the approval of the Minister, lit has been decided to disestablish'tiio secondary department of the Normal School,' Tnorndon, since the' very .small attendance for somo time past does not justify Ilia continuance of the secondary department, and in its present condition this Department cannot afford satisfactory practice oi" administration 'for students, i shnll be glad if the board will take (lie necessary steps fof closing this department. Tho Dc f imrtment will make other arrangements for teaching practice in secondary subjects."

The chairman (Mr. Forsyth) said he favoured closing up the secondary department of the Normal School and the primary department at the High School, l'ho powers that be were too strong to do away with tho latter. It was to be carried on with the assistance of raised fees. There wore only twelve pupils in the secondary department of the Normal School, and all they had to do wac to find a position for the leachor concerned. The department had really outlived its usefulness. It had been established to assist, in the training of teachers, but sincewen the system had changed, and people naturally sent their children U the colleges. The time had arrived when tho number of pupils no longer justiiiaa tho existence of tho department, and arrangements oould lie made to place tiis scholars in the colleges. Mr. Bakowoll (inspector) stated that tho secondary department was '.'stablished some considerable timo ago in connection with the Normal School, when it was used as a teachers' training coU lege for the purpose of training the young teachers, but now the number of scholars was too fow for it to be of any us.\ Mr. R. A. Wright: How many teachers does it affect? Mr. Forsyth: Only one. The motion to disestablish the secondary department at the Normal School was agreed to without dissonl.
