IMPERIAL MIGRATION
Tim: Australian point of view. • London, May 12 (delayed). The Australian Press Agency interviewed the Hon. W. M. M'Pherson (Treasurer of Victoria). With reference to immigration Mr. M'Phersoii said: '"We as a Government feel that our first duty is the repatriation of our soldiers, and thereafter give preference to British ex-Service men, and then British civilians." He welcomed the Colonial Office's proposals regarding immigration of oxService settlers, and intends to confer with the Commonwealth authorities as to co-operating with the States in encouraging British immigration. Meanwhilo immigrants possessing capital need not wait, because the Victorian Government was prepared to make land immediately available, for settlement.. Immigration was necessary for Australia, Ixitli for the development of resources and security against aggression. Mr. M'Pherson applauded Mr. Chamberlain's preference proposals. It was the duty of Britain to afford preference to the Dominions against foreign trade, and the duty of tho Commonwealth to reciprocate.—Aus.-N.Z Cable Assn.-
