THE KING'S THEATRE. An excellent programme is being submitted at the lung's Theutro this week, "The Better 'Ole," Captain Bruce Bairnsfather's brilliantly humorous story being the chief attraction. The funny side of the Great War as depicted by Captain Bairnsfather has made thousands; rock with laughter, and yet the doings of Old Bill, Our Bert, amT\Alf—three typical British "Tommies"—have a strong human interest. As screened by the producers, "The Better 'Ole" has lost none of its charm, and admirers of Captain Bairnsfather's work should not fail to see this very fine picture. The supporting items of the programme are of a high order, -and include episode 11 of "The Scarlet Runner" and the latest "Gazette." Mr. Rupert Meates contributes several pleasing vocal items, and excellent incidental music is discoursed by the King's orchestra. The programme will be presentediKtwice daily throughout the week. Twe afternoon session opens at 2.15. , EMPRESS THEATRE. "The Balcony of Death," a new French drama screening this week at the Empress Theatre, deals with • a young TrKe, who stirred up for herself a lot of trouble and nearly lost a perfectly good husband by hsr refusal (o confide in the husband. Several other interesting items are also shown. Vocal items are rendered nightly by Mr. C. Melvin. EVERYBODY'S THEATRE. ."Milestones," which is attracting large audiences at all sessions- at .Everybody's Theatre, is a film masterpiece in every sense of the word. It is an ail-British production, and a picturißation of'the play by Arnold Bennett. An exciting number of "The House of "Hate' 1 heads the supports. l ' THOMAS MOORE ANNIVERSARY. The shields for competition next Saturday in connection with the Thomas Mfore annual festival have been presented by the Bristol Piano Company and Messrs. Charles Begg aiid Co. Another shield has been presented this year for competition amongst choirs from, girls' schools. The family of the late Mr. W. 11. Sommerville, of Auckland, have also presented two cups for tho elocutionary items next Saturday will repeat the girls. The winners of tho competition items next Saturdaw will repeat the test piece at the Town Hall on May 28. Misses Teresa M'Enroe, Eileen Driscoll, I Outrim, Gladys Watkins, Nellie Strickland, (ind Mrs. Beauchamp, and Messrs. - Kevin Dillon, Fogartv, Reade, and Healy will contribute items. The feature of tho programme will be the concerted items, including a malo quartet.
