COST OF THE WAR
ALL ITEMS NOT YET KNOWN. A cablegram published in our columns on May 15 gave the total cost of the war in respect .of various countries, stating at that time that Now Zealand's outlay was some 753 million pounds. The Hon. Arthur Myers, Acting-Minister of Pinance, made some reference to this fig-' uro in a statement yesterday. ''The total of ,£75,750,000 is given as the figure Tq which our war expenses account will eventually attain," remarked Mr. Myers; "and in this sense the estimate by the Australian statistician is on the moderate side. The actual cost- of the war to New Zealand to March 31 last was G2J millions. When to this is added our expenditure on pensions,, repatriation, discharged soldiers' settlement, interest, etc., the full cost of the part we took in the struggle will ultimately surpass figure of 753 millions referred to. Until. Jiowever. one has the complete figures on which to base estimates, it is impossible to state accurately the amount of the Dominion's total expenditure on war." *
